Was Damon Runyan a Scotsman?

It has been a long time since I re-read Guys and Dolls, the collected stories of Damon Runyon, but today I came across a passage I had no recollection of having seen before.

It is from the Lacework Kid. The scene is in a POW camp and Schultz has just shot his superior officer.

"I will always remember how the blood drips down off the table and splatters over the nine of diamonds that is lying on the floor under your chair and how it comes to mind that the nine of diamonds is considered a very unlucky card indeed and how fortune tellers say it is a sign of death."

Could this be another explanation for the Curse of Scotland?
