Why we go to the bar after the game

Monday and Tuesday in Chicago, my regular partners and I entered a bracketed 1 KO because we all had commitments for the mixed BAM and couldn't play the Spingold.  We won our first two matches and headed to the hotel bar, where a few other players joined us.  The discussion turned to a bidding problem involving a balanced 18-count with 4-4 in the majors, and a top expert said "dude just open 2NT, you won't wrong side it after 1m-1M, they'll lead a major if you play it there..."  Following this bit of bidding theory, he drifted off into his own thoughts for a minute or so and then said "you know, I was just making that up, but there might be something to it!"

Fast forward to our SF match, where on the first board, I pick up AJ92 K987 AKT K2.  Remembering this high-level discussion of bidding theory from the night before, I open 2 showing either a GF hand or 20-21 balanced (bonus for doing it on a hand like this: partner can bid any suit natural and NF opposite 20-21 balanced).  Partner bids 2, I bid 2NT, and everyone passes.

I get a low spade lead, cash the AK of diamonds (great success!) and finish the diamonds, play a club to the king and ace, and eventually the opponents allow me to score an extra trick for +150.  Our teammates have the more pedestrian auction 1-p-p-1-1NT-2-3-all pass.  A heart lead went to the ace, a spade came back to the queen, and a couple of ruffs later declarer was -50 for 5 IMPs our way thanks to a moderately drunken conversation in the bar.

Oh, and the match?  Well, my partner thoughtfully woke up at 1:05 when I called him to see if he was planning to show up for the 1pm game, which meant when he arrived at 1:20 we had a board removed and scored at +3 to the opponents, plus a 3 imp lateness penalty, so we hung on to win by 59, 65 IMPs better but 6 imps later.  I'm sure there's a lesson in all this somewhere.
