Why do the two have to be mutually exclusive. Asking everyone to follow the rules isn't some kind of attack on them. There is no reason not to enforce the rules with a smile, in a firm but friendly way, which should also prevent blood pressure problems.

I think this illustrates one of the reasons why you should apply / enforce all the rules all the time with all of the players.

Unfortunately, I never did get those telepathy pills, so whether they do it by intentional agreement or unintentional ignorance remains a mystery to me.

While I agree that both SHOULD be alertable, I have never seen the first one alerted, nor a director called when it wasn't, and since a sizeable minority (I would estimate about a third) of the club players I've come across play it that way, I'd say I've come across it about 4-5 times a week for the last decade and a half.

No, but more and more I keep wishing I had. I realize that I don;t know you at all, but from what I've seen here over the years, I think bridge needs more people like you.

If I'm not playing 10-12 NT (which I usually am), I pass.

My guess would be that this is happening at a club, and no club director I've ever met ever enforces that rule.

Give me a break! What's “elitist” about “I'd like to see what you're playing”. And if the Herculean chore of taking 2 minutes to fill out a convention card will drive someone from the game, I have a feeling they weren't staying for long anyway, and that their absence will not be a detriment.

I know that attending nationals is very difficult (actually impossible unless within driving distance)for me financially. I've already started saving to pay for my few days in Montreal in July.

You kidding? We invented ice skating there. Oops, I wasn;t supposed to let anyone know I'm from the bad place. Oh, well…

I am as happy as I'm surprised that they got it right in your case. And yeah, playing 10 days is insanely hard. On those too infrequent occasions when I've actually made it day 3 of a 3 day event, I've always had to take at least a full day off to recuperate both mind and body. If you happen to be in Montreal this summer, maybe we'll meet up in the LM pairs.

@Tim: Guess we'll find out in 2023. FWIW, I did mean what I said. However, for personal, non bridge reasons, I needed to get these points credited sooner rather than later, and apparently the only way to do that was to sign up for three years whether I wanted to or not. I decided that the aforementioned non bridge reasons trumped my personal feelings, so I did what needed to be done. If between now and 2023 there are significant enough changes that it looks to me like the organization is at least making an effort, then perhaps I will rejoin. However, I would estimate the odds of that happening to be approximately 0.0378%.

I don;t play it, but if I understand it correctly, it just means the more you like the suit, the lower the card you lead.

Update:

Paid the three years, though as someone on a small, fixed disability pension I would have strongly preferred to not have to.

Kissed and made up (figuratively) with Cindy, and explained where I was coming from, which she seemed to understand.

All that being said, my opinion of how the ACBL handled this hasn't changed an iota (though being called a whining, barking seal was certainly a thoughtful, professional touch).

So that's why I never see them together. I'd wondered about that.

I suspect the price would be three 3 year memberships plus a dollar. One for you, one for me, one as a facilitating fee to allow the transaction, and the dollar for insulting their omniscience and infinite wisdom.

Where can I find this arbitration policy? Is it binding and done by an impartial third party? If so, the letter will be sent in the morning. Thanks for the suggestion.

You suspect correctly. My utter disgust has not abated. In fact, with every interaction, it has only increased. Maybe one day I will have the colossal good fortune of having some form of interaction with that organization that could be classified as positive (heck I'd even take a neutral interaction per decade as a sign of improvement). And maybe one day I'll see a unicorn feeding a mermaid, but I'm not holding my breath for either.

Paul, try to get this through your head, difficult though it apparently is. I DID NOT MISUNDERSTAND ANYTHING. Take a minute, let that sink in, if it is in any way unclear read and re-read the above until it becomes crystal clear. I held up my end of the deal as it was explained to me by an authorized representative of that benighted organization. Having done so, it's now their turn to do the same. PERIOD!
