wow Ian how strong and beautiful. what about using time on listening to the players ( not the set of superior intelectual human beings we got in law and ethics) and make the rules possible to understand for us simple people ( without studying them for days). and taking away the tools of winning points and destroying pleasure. i heard for years that all the changes were for simplicity and protection of players. they are not. only people who make them, belive so.
its not the first and not the last time that the rules disturbing the normal way of playing bridge and inducing players to behave in the way which for some is normal and for some controversial.
thats how good our book is… ( is it a blue one ?)

It’s unbelievable! Bidding in England is as loud today as it was 30 years ago before bidding boxes… we have to announce more and more bids ( even in the long matches and with convention cards necessary on the table) and when we explain bids we have to say more and more. Are you seriously saying that i have to say this very long sentence nobody wants to listen to if my partner ( and I hope all of them who can play bridge) open 2clubs and it is our only strong opening ?
I got no comments to players who don’t bid 2 spades but “would” if they got this special answer… I am sure they were fully aware that opponents could open with that hand.
What is it good for?

Wow!!!Norman you are going very far to please your wife.
It’s new for me how modern and equality oriented You became. Good for you. But why do you want everyone think like you ( or rather your wife)? And if they do not - nazis and Hitler easily sneaking into the conversation…
it makes you look young - typical snowflake generation, finding something to get upset about comment.
Next step Twitter - storm and asking international federations to take Martens titles and points away!

i think you went mad David. ebu rules are not weird and not particularly difficult to understand? how many players do know and understand them? you david gold paul barden trying to explain that its obvious what and why should be alerted. wwell i guess you spend a lot of time on it. we top players know or intuitively do the right thing most of the times but what about the rest? i am afraid those rules ,those attitudes and ( i am sorry to say ) actions like simon's (very surprising to me ) killing the popular open events. you can argue and discuss for another 500 comments but most of players under national lever are just scared of all that.
i mix with a lot of them and hear hundreds of td and alert stories. and i heard many of them saying that is a main reason why they don't want to play in bigger events… you can be intellectually happy with yourself and those great rules but they do much more harm than good.

Roy. You are wasting your breath by talking to people who want to argue for the argument itself.

I agree now it is a crunch time. i waited for the real international event for this to happened and i HOPE that they will enter. It sounds crazy but i will explain why..

In the last year the cheats managed to sneak in to some events and play. In some of them thy were welcome by organizer (Barcelona last year) in some by friendly (usually Italian) psychofantic crowd. When i heard about it i got sick. what happened to the outrage and morale of the normal bridge players. i was upset to see how many top players performed in those events and didnt do anything. Then it came to me that we all should do what we think is right and dont judge. I tried Steve's approach and didn't go to Barcelona this year because i knew they will play there and i didnt want to play a part in the same event. Later on i realized that it made me feel better but had no influence on the bridge world and the event…

My new approach is that i will enter the event (Istanbul) and if the cheats are allowed to play i will get up at the start of the event and walk out. I hope that my partner/teammates will understand and agree.
Why was i waited and hoped that that will happened? well i hope that there is enough players there, who will show that they love the game more than they weeks holiday, professional earnings or obedience towards authority that will react in the same or other (like yours) way and give the international federations choice between all of us or few of them.

It is Monaco bashing only because everybody forgot about italian titles won with Fantoni Nunes. As for a Question Jean-Charles. it is obvious that any organiser of the top bridge event have to be prepared to answer and especially Monaco. I played in every Cavendish in Your country but wouldnt dream to come if your old internationals are coming. i am sure that it goes for a lot of players. Nothing to be upset about just to state your policy.

obviously that should be a determined policy BEFORE the teams went to the championships. Not that surprising that England qualified?

i hope not {really belive that SERIOUS organisers will be stronger than that}. i had this situation with Piekarek before…. Lets see if other players got any spine and show that the game and the principals are more important that quiet acceptance of anything just beccause they dont want trouble.

david burn. should we invite Fantoni _Nunes to Spring foursomes and see if Ebu accept the entry? and then happily get a drink in the bar!!
i am shocked to read you comments on this subject. can we stop hear this “rules and regulations above the all” mantra?
This game will not survive on this “lawyer talk”. we need ethics (not rule book ethics but normal human) and some spine.
nothing good ever happened when everybody follow the rules and bad guys do what they want.

i was more interested in reaction of a top players who got (in my opinion) responsibility to the game i can state here and now that i would leave {loudly} even if i played with my sponsor or wife. hope they would understand… is it possible that no one did?

David. here we go again. all this careful talk about rules, rights,rationality.. thats why so many players close their eyes and ears. they want decisions from someone else . would they react in the same way in the everyday life? or would they show that they got opinions, morals and strenght?
