@tom the hand is posted under the title “ Do you bid on or not ” 3NT was out of tempo . Director ruled to allow the 4NT bid but the committee overturned it ( correctly in my opinion)

Peggy . You can make the same argument that partner could have shown you extras. You have no cards in their suits

On board 63 if he pitches a he retains control and gets out for down 1 and wins the match. He can make it however. Ruff the high and play Heart Heart ruffing in dummy. Then ruff the third club in hand and cash the ace of trumps . West is down to 2 trumps and the Kx of Diamonds. Just play high Hearts and the defense can only get the Heart and 3 trump tricks

I like Helness's 3NT bid . There is a middle of the road action . One can bid Stayman and if available Puppet Stayman ( this way we can conceal opener's hand to some extent) . We either play the 5-4 Heart fit or the 5-3 Spade fit.

When deciding whether to play 3NT or 4 of a major one must realize that if they are both making the same amount of tricks then 3NT is right. If the major is making 1 more trick then either is right. So in order for the major to be better than NT it has to be making 2 more tricks . Factor in that the opps are far more likely to concede a trick on opening lead in 3NT than in 4 of a Major and you see that 4M has to be nearly 2.25 tricks better than 3 NT to be right. Ergo when in doubt 3NT

4C should be choice of games Q bid . I think North should bid 4D and now you get to play 4H when South shows a flexible 4H bid. I guess you can play East for 2-2-3-6 and the KQ C and K of D . That would make the hand on a partial elimination but seems anti percentage

Howard Pilch is a former president of the league and my understanding is he was barred from the league at some point. I am not sure about the details. Anyone whop cheats in this fashion really wants to get caught. Couldnt he just dbl and over partner's 4 response bid 6?

Agreed Jason and I did think about that as well as Jxx of in declarer's hand ( for which there is no defense) but that is a very specific holding and better to take partner off the wear and tear of figuring this out( not to mention the fact that a good declarer is going to guess it out most of the time anyway) . When I hold trick one I assume I need to do something that partner can't do himself so either a shift or a trump shift is indicated ( if you decide declarer is 2-3-2-6 and you dont want to break a suit)

Perhaps partner should overtake the Heart and play the spade king . That's what I would do.
