I can speak for Mike's unit. Our Unit is begging for people to serve on our Board. We have excellent volunteers but they have done their time. It is hard to get new blood.

Second, no BOD in our district has voted for the District Director for a long, long time. It is too normal for our District Directors to run unopposed.

When one of the World's best matchpoint players, Bobby Levin, having already limited his hand launches into a blackwood auction opposite a mostly unlimited partner bids a grand but does not go looking for 7NT (via 5NT) that is very telling.

When Joey bids 7NT suggesting tricks he hasn't shown, I don't think a major suit lead is a logical alternative - you are about to hear SPLAT! next board.

I very much want to punish the hesitation non double but to me the auction screams for a diamond lead.

Club director.

I think you were premature in your director call. Except your knowledge of your friends, there is no evidence East does not have a splinter. The 5D might be the right time but I might have waited until the pass of 6D.

I tell all my club players to call when an irregularity occurs at their table. It is the job of the director to make these decisions and every player should be aware of this.

Before I think about rolling the contract back to 4H I would like to know two things: (1) do they really have an agreement that this auction shows a splinter and (2) what East's plan was after jumping to 4D.

In the last 8 weeks, within reasonable driving distance from Iowa City: Minneapolis 1169/Champaign 551, Crystal Lake 810/Topeka 421, Coralville 375, Chicago 486 and Sioux City 421.

Both Chicago and Sioux City were helped by the Indonesian National players.

I don't think the problem is that Champaign and Minneapolis have Regionals on the same weekend is the problem. I say this because there are not that many players choosing whether to go to one or the other these days. Players are deciding for personal reasons to travel or not to travel to these Regionals.

Let's take Bob Otto for example. He was a regular at the Gopher Regional for years because he was interested in District 14 politics. He is now a regular at the Champaign Regional because they offer a Barometer Pairs which this year he and Mike Roush won.

If you want larger attendance offer a better mousetrap, have better marketing techniques or move your Regional to where there are more bridge players.

You are 100% responsible. When partner says he has none the third time you ask, then you have no responsibility.

Always ask unless you play with someone who does not revoke.

The first advice I got from a good player has worked very well: Run your long suit.

Peg, I will try not to say anything nice to you this weekend. Let me tell you in advance how much I appreciate your thoughtful play and creative bidding.

I have a player in my club who almost always says well done when his partner makes a contract. His partners seem to miss the fact that they have taken one trick less than everybody else.

Be nice. Call the director when there is an irregularity. What could it hurt?

Peg, some have said that calling the director is what you do best.

I believe the rules state that you call the director.

Peg,
Have faith – technology will come along to make the game better. What we don’t want is to be sitting at the table wondering why we aren’t sitting back on our bed with our favorite bird on our shoulder playing bridge.

Someone will come along with at the table card reader which will record both the bids and the cards played. It will be able to keep a record, keep track of time and make it harder to pass information.

Someone will come along with a hand held device for directors allowing to record director calls, better keep an eye on slow play and allow more directors on the floor.

Someone will come along making it easier for players to record suspect actions by using their smart phones or computers.

There is plenty of ways to improve the at the table experience. Playing bridge will get better – the trick will be to get more people playing the game.

19430 represents nine years of masterpoints to Passell. Does this mean he has been doing this for nine years, it happened nine years ago, or just a random punishment?

I appreciated the quantity, quality, and demeanor of all the young players (under 30) in the LM Pairs. People have been trying to convince me for a long time that bridge was going to dwindle away when I got old. It is good to know that Bridge has a future. However, now I feel old.

I would also like to appreciate what the NABC's having been doing well for a long time. Training Caddies. The Caddies at Nationals are responsive, unobtrusive and often ahead of the “Caddy Please” call.
