I was hoping to agree with something Steve says before the end of the Toronto nationals, but happy to settle for the Tuesday after since it involves the advancement of Mr. Smith. Matt is tip top as a director, a wonderful fellow and a dog lover to boot! Best of all he is no pushover- so wiseguys beware.

I watched the 4th quarter, it was dull until helgi bid a slam with AKJxxxx opposite a stiff in trumps and off an Ace. He made it….A few boards later the Helgis got to 6d–Ben Kristensen lead the club Ace, Hellness insta called low from the dummy, Kevin Rosenberg thought intensely for 7-8 seconds and then played low. Ben thought for 10 seconds and gave his partner a club ruff. Now we all know how ethical we all say we are, but heres a young kid playing the biggest match of his life against the best of the best–and ethically he is still beyond belief. A chip off the old blocks? Can it look any better for our future champions to be? I think not.

1) How you feeling Billy Ray? Still got that Vandy buzz on?

2)Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world what was your favorite victory and why?

3)Sorry I just saw my question was already asked so I'll go with another one–Have you ever won the Green Point pairs in NYC? I got my fingers crossed hoping I got something you don't !

Hopper J.-what a wonderful fellow. We had the great fortune to add him to our trials team in 1980 to play with our sponsor, Bud Reinhold. We got to the finals of the trials against a very strong team. We were consistently losing imps and going into the 2nd day we decided the only chance we had was to change lineups and allow me to play with Reinhold and John to play with Russ Arnold. Reinhold and I did well in the afternoon and John and Russ Arnold were brilliant and we won easily. Now we come to the Bermuda Bowl and for various reasons I end up playing with John in the 3rd set of the finals. The match is very close. We get to 6 clubs in a 4-4 (thank you 2 way stayman) with 9 solid hearts between us and instead of pulling trumps and claiming I play on and go 1 off. The Hopper doesn't blink. The next set we play and have one of the biggest sets I have ever had. John declares every hand like he can see their cards. We win the set 65-9 and the match is essentially over. John was a hero, an awesome character, and of course a fantastic bridge player. RIP my friend.

The wealthy man Mark played with was Seymour Leibowitz—quite a character.

Congrats Eddie-nice to see a sure first time Hall of Famer make it in. The funniest thing I ever saw at the bridge table was when you were playing with this 103 year old woman at the Southeasterns in Florida with her 75 year old son watching. Of course you somehow won the KOs with her but do you remember the hand she lead the 4 of hearts during the bidding? Please tell the story-I promise I will laugh at loud again.

I would like to enlighten people out there who know you only as a tightly strung, fiercely competitive person at the bridge table that I am lucky enough to be a close friend and have seen first hand what a devoted son, brother, uncle, husband and father to Atlas you are. You are especially kind to friends in need. Go back a short time when Joe Boo was thin and dressing like he was out of GQ magazine, it was Geoff's closet that he always went wandering. Although you have been one of the top players in the world for over 20 years now your recent dominance has been offensive. So my question is….WTF are you doing differently? Is there some new enhancer out there I don't know about? Give!
