I had a great time last week, and I’m really looking forward to this week’s battle! Of course if joe and I can’t beat them, at least we know we can take them on the judo mat.

I hope this is what you are looking for:

in my experience, different styles (often conflicting) can be effective or not. what seems more indicative of success is the fortitude to be yourself. to be unafraid of failure or looking stupid. and when things do go wrong(or even right), it is essential to be able to move on with no memory.

as you have previously stated, bridge is an incomplete information game. as such players must constantly make judgements. I think the prism through which one does so is less important than the sole goal being success, rather than looking good. bridge is such a hard game; there are a great many outside forces that get in the way of optimal play. peer pressure, successfully navigating the pro world, personality flaws, fear of losing, fear of looking bad, fear of winning, and partnership/team dynamics to name a few.

an example of this might be playing a known mathematically inferior line of play, because your judgement is that it will produce a positive EV versus the “correct line.” if your judgement is wrong you will look bad and possibly annoy your partner/teammates. in my experience the best players, make what they think the best play/bid is and win or lose, they play the next hand.

Fred is one of the best players to play game. more than that, he is one of the best people to play the game. I was fortunate enough to be his partner for many years; we are all fortunate enough to benefit from his incredible contributions. Congrats and thank you, Freddie.
