Well, there's that, lol. Remember the episode of Big Bang where the guys were playing a game and Penny brought 3 hot friends to the apartment with the statement they were bored and looking for sex and none of the guys even looked up?

The reason I laughed so had at that is that there is a story about Terence Reese where they walked a naked girl past him while he was playing bridge and he didn't notice.

Just so you know, at exactly two hours prior to the 4 pm game BBO was so jammed it was not possible to log in. We broke BBO !!!

I guess $15 per person per session wasn't too much, lol.

Pay some attractive college students to hang out from time to time. You can even quietly pay them to attend your beginner classes at the time you want to attract their peers and others somewhat close to that demographic. Please, non-marketers, I don't want to hear comments about this – think boat show.)

Thanks Ray! Unfortunately because I just published this article it won't let me publish on the P desk page for another hour, lol.

I don't disagree with that conclusion, but the idea of that random nonsense creating action is (was) part of the allure of bridge vs. chess, etc. That's one reason Swiss got so popular; fewer boards meant palookas might, as a result of one lucky board, win a match and get some points for their attendance. The big boys might grouse a bit, but I've found that they are able to protect themselves pretty well.

They should have stood up the ace of spades…
Can't read the article, don't subscribe and don't want to, and don't want to jump through their hoops to read the article.

I think the big erosion happened when we started creating separate games above 49er (first 99er, then 199er, etc.). My mentor would object to the entire flighting concept, but I can see the benefit both to the students and the broader field for having a small, separate beginner pool where they can learn mechanics and proprieties before we throw them in the deep end of the big game.

Also I noticed I was wrong on undos. “No, not you!” Yep. It now seems that undo is autoloaded in the teaching table. I was doing that part of the videos from memory, and I must have been ‘memberin’ a different version method, or OKBridge or something from my past. Or, perhaps like a certain talk radio personality, we'll discover that my only error was thinking I had made one. Time and multiple new outings will tell.

Well, there's that too, lol. By definition if I'm promoting it and know it to be worthless (or should know) then I'm a scoundrel.

Summer best chance to have fewer sick and recovered and hopefully immune thereafter, so they don't all get it in the fall. Makes sense.

>>not telling our non-LM population that the life master system at this point is a fraud and means essentially nothing.<<

Who's not telling them? My 1st bridge teacher told me that in 1985, and I suspect HIS mentor told him the same thing. It's not like you find out only when you get your 32d degree or something, it's out there in the open and common knowledge.

We don't tell our students to join ACBL for the points, (it's the Bulletin, stupid), but once they join they are told that one of their goals might be Life Master, and the Bulletin reinforces that monthly.

At least now we have an opportunity to get them to step up in their comfort level and try playing in the big pond for “only” $15 and 18 boards and one session, with Gold and Red as a reward for their bravery.

I fail to understand why this is somehow immoral.

Greg, that train left the station 50 years ago. While it's often useful to beat a down horse in order to get it up and walking, it just makes no point to beat a dead one.

As a bridge teacher and promoter I feel strongly that if we are not promoting these “cheap” gold point games to our non-LM population we are doing them a tremendous disservice. They ain't gonna be this cheap (no travel expenses) and easy (only 18 boards despite all the “helpful” folks who want to make them 24 or 26 per session) for long.

There's just a piece of data we're not collecting, and it's crutial for seeing the big picture accurately. Senior Living and Long Term Care facilities often are divided into wings, one for “residents” (those who are being housed there and cared for until they die of whatever is fixin' to kill them), possibly a lockdown wing for various types of dementia, and then a “transient” convalescent care wing for recovery from surgery or accident. If the folks in the last category are getting hit hard by Corona, then we have a problem. If it's the other folks, it's not as though they were just fine and along came Corona to smite them. Inquiring minds want to know.

I still favor Platinum point games on BBO, either stratified OPEN pairs (no bots) or stratified open SWiss (No flights, no bots). Event overall awards 100% Platinum, sub awards mixture Platinum/Gold. If you and pard have a great outing you get 100% Platinum and if you win overall an NABC+ qual toward GLM. If you only win your strat you get a mix of Platinum and Gold. Place in section or overall in one session only you get Gold only (except maybe 1/4 Platinum for top 10 overall in a session across the sections).

In Jacoby Open Swiss all awards 100% Platinum. Must play all boards all sessions per day to qual. 2nd day is finals; non Q play second day in separate Gold only Swiss with carry over score from day 1.

Replace Montreal with this!
