A ‘wild guess’ like this is incredibly inappropriate.

Kerri and I played frequently with Barry Crane. His tempo was impeccable and to throw this accusation out also means that you think that the two of us were offering unauthorized information. We are outraged and hurt by the offhand nature of this accusation 30+ years after the death of our friend.”

To David Caprera on the future of bridge:

The future of bridge seems dim. We must get our kids playing cards not video games. A great start would
be a push to get bridge into our middle and high schools.

To Allan Simon on the lead from J986 against notrump:

Old fashioned I would lead the 6. I also don’t mind the 9, catering to
K10x
Axx

and the same goes for Q986.

To Chris Gibson on slumps:

When I was just starting out, I would feel the improvement. Then months would go by, and I would sense another growth spirt in my game
and so on. Now that I am past my peak, when I feel I am not playing up to par I try to slow down. When that doesn’t work a nap usually does the job.

To Tanya Rodich:

I consider Ron Smith to be a wonderful talent, and a good friend. As Chair of seeding Ron
is absolutely one of my most trusted seeders He invariably seeds the later rounds of most big pair games. The best thing about Ron is his sense of humor, when coupled with his great smile is a winning combination. I have played him many times, been his teammate also, and he always makes sure the game is fun for all.

We go way back with Amalya. Lisa and Amalya were tennis buddies, Amalya is a great tennis player.
I played against her and Jacqui Mitchell in the old days, and they were both fierce competitors and fine players.

Goodbye everyone. I would like to thank BW for the opportunity to air some of my views, and would like to thank all the correspondents for their wonderful questions.

Never too late, I am off to golf, back 130 and will answer questions then.

I am not a big risk taker on leads (although I lead from kings against suit small slams), but I can remember a few times, but I rather lead my aces than underlead them.

You have to be like Hamman. Forget the last hand and focus every ounce of your energy on the next one. Do not try to get it back, its gone. One board at a time

Fred.

I am still here, answering away. So if you feel like coming down from that mountain you live on and ask a question, go ahead. Meanwhile answer me this, who preempts more, you or Kit?

I am going to sleep now, but I will get up in the morning and continue if there are any more questions. As Arlo Guthrie once famously sung, “I'm not proud”, but I am tired and have a 9 am tee time

One needs a logical mind, and needs to enjoy problem solving. Some of the smartest people I know cannot play a lick of bridge. If you have the mind for it, then you need dedication to the game. You need to read. Show promise and better players will flock to you.

Hey Andy,

Did Larry put you up to this? Once I was sure I had fractured the LAW, and LC said you made some nice adjustments there.

I do use the Law in my competitive judgement as I fear that when I am on Vu-graph LC will be commentating and may never forgive me for a LAW violation

I like story books, like the Bridge Bum, Zia, Hamman and Wolff's books. I also love reading old bridge worlds, Edgar and Jeff (and Sonny) were so good. I also love the classics, Kelsy Ottlik and of course Larry, as long as he mentions me.

I find it best to never say anything at the table. Anything I have to say can wait. I find that after the session at dinner for example, conflicts are much easier to resolve than in the heat of the battle.

Anyone I know put you up to this? Lisa and I can only give it our best and hope it all works out. We do seem to be lacking in the Grandchildren department.

Hi Joe

30 or 40 (my God) I was sharper, more focused, and had much more energy. Now I find myself working harder to get the same results, but I do believe my experience over the years has helped me a lot.

I like writing, but sometimes I am a slow starter, but when I do get going…Practicing on BBO is a great idea, and after you get going you should find someone to interfere with all your beautiful sequences

Best advice, play with great players. Seriously though, when we were young you could rely on the average Joe to misbid and misplay. Those days are long gone. You have to be more active in the auctions, giving the opposition novel problems. I like Precision, and that makes many of our auctions different than the field. So with light openers and the club or diamond openers we get plenty of action. After that, we try to play down the middle, with just a tad more aggressiveness.
