Is 1NT forcing? If so, I bid 3S forcing.

You opened 1C showing a minimum of 3. The next time you freely bid 3C so have at least 6. 4C shows 7. Bridge is such a simple game!

Derrick, I think the player in question was Sam Needham, a Sydney player from the early 80s who now lives in the US I think. Pretty sure his partner was David B. I think they were playing against Marston/Burgess, with Paul the declarer.

What possibilities have been eliminated when LHO plays small, as they invariably do in 98% of cases?

True, there is no “rule” that says you have to do all your thinking before playing a card but there should be. Why play the card and then think? The only reason I can think of is that declarer is trying to get a read on LHO and I don't think that's ethical. Bridge should be better than Texas hold ‘em. But what would I know? The highest level I’ve ever played at is the quarter finals of the NOT in Australia. Clearly, bridge played at higher levels welcomes this sort of tactic.

It's cheating, not just “inappropriate”. I ask people why they lead from the closed hand towards a KJ holding and after LHO has followed small (surprise, surprise) they tank. They have no valid answer. It's simply outrageous that this sort of unethical behaviour is allowed at any level of bridge.

I assume the above applies equally to dummy.

Well, here's what the Laws say:

LAW 74 - CONDUCT AND ETIQUETTE
B. Etiquette

As a matter of courtesy a player should refrain from:
1. paying insufficient attention to the game.

C. Violations of Procedure
The following are examples of violations of procedure:

5. looking intently at any other player during the auction and play, or at another player’s hand
as for the purpose of seeing his cards or of observing the place from which he draws a card

I didn't know you were allowed to read a book as dummy!

I'm not so sure I'd be leading a club on this hand. Partner will have very little and I don't want to give declarer an easy trick. Red suit lead stands out for me. But I do like the winning spade king play.

I don't think you should have to explain what a penalty double is. It simply means that I don't think you're going to make your contract. Hasn't it always meant that?

I'm impressed that your kids can hold 13 cards in their hands. I was raised on 500 where of course you only have to cope with 10 cards. Making the move up to 13 was just one of the many challenges in taking the next step.

This is the best bridge story ever told. I'd never heard of minibridge. Very cool! Your daughter has such a great attitude. Well done for instilling that love of the game in both your kids. Thanks so much for sharing.

Hooray for the ban. He was, and maybe still is, well liked by a lot of the Aussie youth players. What about FN? Are they like-wise banned from playing in Australia, as a pair or individually?

Too much laughing and smiling for my liking. Are they serious? Why do we bother?
