Is the game ACBL-sanctioned and offering masterpoints?

“… or so his profile said”
The Dunning-Kruger effect is strong everywhere, but nowhere as strong as when someone is filling out an online profile.

…. And if the alert is required because the bid denies hearts (presumably we'd be doing something else with spades and hearts) then original poster's problem is solved simply by providing that explanation. The opponents get the the negative inference about hearts to which they are entitled, and original poster is spared the concern about misleading the opponents.

> Partner said he has extra values.
Did they? It doesn't take much to balance over 2H at matchpoints… I wouldn't read that second double as showing much more than a reasonable belief that 2H undoubled won't matchpoint very well for us.

Huh - and then a few days ago the problem healed itself…. So your friend might want to try again and see if it's working now.

No communication from OKB, so I doubt that the miraculous cure was a response to my months of unanswered pleading

Yes, 1S-P-3S-P-P-P when responder is xxxxx,x,x,xxxxxx is rather implausible.

But 1S-P-? is a possible start, so the question still stands: If responder is going to make a 3S limit raise with that hand, what would responder hold for the sequence 1S-P-4S-?

If the first of these (xxxxx,x,x,xxxxxx) is a limit raise in the opponents' style, what would responder hold for the auction 1S-4S?

I've had exactly this problem “Server connection has been lost” with OKBridge since early January. Repeated phone calls, the online help form, and emails to their help/support address have been ignored. Finally I gave up and asked my credit card company to reverse the charge for the $99 annual fee.

I know that the problem is at OKB's end because I can create a new account (two-week free trial) and it works just fine. If I log in with one of these trial accounts I can check the profile/statistics for my real account and it shows my attempts to connect as successful recent logins…. even after I reversed the credit card charge.

The only signs of life I have seen from OKB are the automated emails I get asking me if want to convert one of my trial accounts after two weeks…. and around early march they changed the recording on their phone number from “Leave your okbridge user name and callback phone number” to “we're no longer offering phone support, email the help address instead”.

Are NS playing fast arrival here? If so, north's AK of trump is huge.

Hands like this are a lot easier with Precision or other strong-club system. With four losers and 21 HCP made up of aces and kings, I can see opening the north hand 2C despite the nauseating minor-suit shape… but it's a stretch.

If you don't open the north hand 2C, you will not find the slam when south holds their absolute perfecto. That doesn't mean that the 1S opening is wrong, it means that your methods aren't optimized for this particular problem.

The 1NT bidders may be counting on new-minor-forcing to get from NT to spades when it's right.

Of course this won't work if partner is minimum and passing at their next opportunity. There's a tradeoff here between accuracy in the forward-going auctions and landing in the optimum partial.

It would be interesting to know whether any of the 1NT bidders would bid 2S instead if partner were a passed hand.

The overwhelming majority for a top heart is unsurprising… so is there more to the story?

“Board must be reported to TD” feels like an odd option unless there's something more to the story?

> might be implying that the UI from East's slow pass over 2♦ suggested five spades rather than four

That argument feels like a stretch to me. East can't count on west for four spades, so will be looking for something forcing but less committal than the jump to 4S if not holding five.

If west does choose to show diamonds first however…. 6D by east turns out OK (unless south leads a heart away from the ace, in which case east has a hard-luck story for the ages).

> West was dealer
Yes, but the point of the comments about whether you'd open the south is that if you think the south hand would be worth opening if east had been the dealer, then you also think that it is worth forcing to game in this situation.

Can't argue with that, but then we wouldn't have an opening lead problem :)

It would be very helpful to know which drugs partner is on.

Uppers suggest a pass, downers suggest 3N or double….
and either way, aren't we supposed to disclose this to the opponents? :)

I recall a story about Al Roth recognizing a board that he had played some days ago at the same national event.

In the old days of hand-shuffling and dealing, it's easy to see how a board could be accidentally transferred from the not-made pile to the made pile without being shuffled.

In slow play situations:
Maybe I'm just lucky with the directors that I've encountered, but I've generally gotten good outcomes when I call the director at the start of the round: “The opps just got here and we're already five minutes into the round - we'll do what we can to catch up.”
