upon 2, opener would have bid 4 showing 3451 or 3460.

2NT: any hand without 4c or 3c, stoppers in and
3 : strength, no 4c, no 3c, no stopper
3 : long s, no 4c, no 3c
3 : 4c, no stopper
3 : 3c, 14+ nice hand
3NT: 4c and stopper

I was not discussing what is the best approach but only what is fairly standard over here.
And yes, the 7 could come from (suit contract):
H107x, H97x, H87x, 1087x, 7810, 789, 7x

“8753 the normal lead is 8 to show even.”

Perhaps, it was the normal lead some time ago but nowadays the normal lead would be 7.

Anyway, this has nothing to do with semantics. Either a bid is forcing or not, the concept of almost forcing, semi forcing is just a way to say non forcing except..i.e., basically not forcing.

Here are the 2 hands whith which we reached (normally i think) 5, though it was down 1, we just wondered whether 4 was forcing or not, independantly of the hand we played:

96
KQJ3
AJ
AKJ107

AQJ2
1062
854
Q64

as a semi-forcing bid may be passed, it is by definition not forcing ;)

See above, when 2NT is not available as a weak treatment.

say:
xx
KQJx
Ax
AKJxx

in front of

Axxx
xxx
xxx
Qxx

it may be nice to be able to stop in 4 no?

In fact, in my regular partnership, it would have been NF. We play 2NT after overcall shows a stopper, then 3 is only a simple preference, then 3 is last try to play 3NT. Whan all of this failed to reach 3NT, we are allowed to pass 4, which is, indeed, extremely rare but it may happen.

No discussion about 3 being GF or not. If not, what would you bid then with a 19 count, 2=4=2=5 without stopper over 3 ?
