It's a pity you switched cards Kate. Rena will realise with her spades that you don't want spades and maybe will therefore realise it was suit preference any way!

At our table Helene opened 1S which I like. Bidding went 1S-2H-2S-2NT (enquiry) - 4S. Liz, I agree that voids make the hand potentially very powerful. I am interested in your reasoning behind preferring to preempt with 7042 as opposed to 7033?

At our table Helene doubled the 1C and I jumped to 2D showing less than opening values but 5-card suit. This was enough for Helene to jump to 3NT, played safely for 9 tricks.

We do have an agreement here. The opps have shown both majors so we can bid 2D natural non-forcing, 2H good clubs, 2S good diamonds and 3D natural non-forcing with longer diamond suit. X is general values. So, I think North should bid 2D.

Unfortunately we were a bit aggressive on this board. Helene doubled with the North hand and after East's 4H I bid 4S! Swap the King of diamonds with the king of spades and we might even engineer 4S making. Despite North's soft values, I do like the general principle of taking action immediately but on this hand I would probably have passed. 4S is also a bit pushy.

If partner bids 4H over 4D I have enough to give it one more push with 4NT. When I hear she has the A and Q hearts I can see 12 tricks. 7 still seems dangerous. In all honesty I'm not totally sure we'll get there. In 2/1 we'd easily get there because I know the hearts are a really good suit.

We don't play 2/1 so have a different problem. I certainly like a jump to 3H in 2/1 to be setting the suit. In Helene and my system the jump promises around 14hcp. It doesn't have to be a solid heart suit - could be same as above but with AQxxxx. On the assumption we don't introduce a new suit at the 4-level, I think we would have to bid 4C as natural (forcing) and 4D as agreeing on hearts and a cue bid. 3S would be natural but not a bid you'd actually make on this hand.
So the bidding would go

1H-2C
3H-4D
4S-4NT
5s-5NT
6D-7C
7H-7NT

7C would be a suggestion to play there.

Can anyone suggest a better way of bidding if playing our system rather than 2/1?

I’m not sure why south should duck a diamond. Play ace or king then a small one. You might end up making all 5 diamond tricks. If north only has 2 diamonds ducking wont help.

I would bid 2H at this vul (5H 4 minor). Why not?

I should bid 3H not 3D. They have shown 2 suits so a bid of one of the suits shows stoppers. From my perspective 3NT is still a viable option.

It feels right to open this 4S but I am never sure when to open 1 and when to open 4. Does anyone have any guidelines please?

Dummy (N) Qxx

Declarer (S) Jxx

Firstly assume split honours. If East has length, lead the Queen. East may duck. If West has length, lead the Jack. West might duck. We are hoping for the short hand to have Kx or Ax. If the hand with length rises, then next time we lead a small one from the same hand. Perhaps they rose because they have both of them. If opening leader didn’t lead AKx assume they don’t have it. Play the other one for AKx or Kxx or Axx. Lead honour from dummy.

We are also assuming we are having a lucky day.

East was sleeping. North’s shape is most likely 2344 or 3244 so a heart lead is reasonable. But in mid game when west switches to king spades and small spade clearly east should wake up and give east spade ruff.
