The popularity of TV was pretty much parallel with the rise of drug culture. You know neither requires much intellectual input. hmmm Like comparing Dylan, Cohen,Simon etc. to contemporary music.

Dewitt Hudson wrote a complete report of all Governor meetings from 1999 to 2018 in the D16 Publicaton "The Scorecard. Sadly Dewitt passed away recently and we have not had any of the BOD replace him

Actually Peg as recently as 2013 the rage in your district was still KOs-if you study just the regionals in your immediate locale you will see that about that time give or take they started promoting bracketed swiss directly against the KO for a few years the KO still flourished-then by 2017 they were all but gone. Pity

Actually as Buddy pointed out there were 3 or 4 top teams in the swisses in SA but seriously 20 years and 30 years ago those 3 to 4 teams would not be in the top 3-those teams were Wolff, Brachman, Goldman Wold Passell Soloway, (John) Sutherlin, and Bob from Dallas and others. Those that played last week went to other regionals that had KOs

Now the way schedules are many toppish players go to the pairs-they don't always do well.

In the old days it was a thrill to make the semis of a 16 t5eam KO- Of course the Gnomes of Memphis has changed that with 200 events replacing 6. Surely they did and evaluation of the efficacy of the attendance.

Now happily I might add that many of those top teams lost to lower teams(mp wise) and that helps keep the game strong.

I am fine with swiss teams, but I miss the KOs. The best schedule would have KO's be 2 day with swisses every 2n day. Really what I want most of all is what Buddy and Peg want-I want to sit down and play bridge so anything that promotes the game is good.

Compact KOs are proof that people will still play regardless how poorly designed an event is
I mean I know no one that prefers them

Chess because if an expert plays an intermediate he should always win
In BG an intermediate can win 40 % of the games in the long run tho < 40% of the points
In the short run any thing can happen
Now in a typical 3 hour session there are maybe 1200 dice rolls while in bridge only 26 although you can say Morevia suit But I think it takes longer to evaluate in bridge
In BG you can actually see all the pieces and make quicker evaluations

Over 20 years ago it was decided to avoid 3 ways in The Spingold and The Vanderbilt to avoid 3 ways but in the early round maybe if it was unavoidable. Like 65 teams. But never much later.

Now the GNT has been around since 1973 and one would think by 2019 everyone would have an idea how it goes

In D22 It seems at least to some extent one director thought Walter's team won. Now if the director didn't intuitively know the exaxt method-how do you think the player's would.

In D16 we qued at Unit and 64 teams made it to District for consecutive RRs and then KOs
It lasted 3.5 days and I had a blast getting to RR2. We got to play against The Aces and many other gret playes. It became my Holy Grail(If only I knew my favorite color!)

Well they flighted it and eventually had to fotz with the CoC, but really it always made sense. We had RRs to get to 4 and then 2. Once we had 3 teams and had a full day RR to get to two for the final. OF COURSE everyone assumed that if one won 2 they are in and if all were 1-1 they would decide by anything but VPs

Thing is that after 46 years the contestants had certain expectations and there has never been an issue.

Now if for some reason the organzers came up with a 3 way final-I am sure we would get new organizers. And they would always be players who enjoy this event. Perspective is a wonderful thing.

As an added point I think all events should be planned that we can keep people playing as long as possible. The format at the recent trials is a great example of doing things right.
I remember once the national Women's KO has 23 teams. The first round they played down to 8!
Not so curious that that event is gone from the schedule

The GNT and NAPs need to be model events that other events try to emulate. If you want bridge to thrive BUILD A BETTER PRODUCT

One year we lost a quarterfinal at the national finals by 1 IMP over 64 hands
Too bad it wasn't converted to VPs. We might still be playing

i think we can all agree that a VP scale that declares a 3 IMP win a 10-10 tie was certainly NOT created by bridge players. the VP scale was created to give more credit for big wins, avoid ties at 6-2 or 7-1 . But NEVER to negate a win no matter how small.

Also while waiting for the D22 entrant I notice there are only 11 Districts on ACBL GNT rosters. Also D16 has 2 qualifiers in B and only 1 is listed.

WWCSS? CS=Casey Stengel

Oh well I think we will leave for Houston to actually play bridge this weekend
