A word about the ACBL's travel agent. There are several direct non-stop flights from Toronto to Atlanta on three different airlines every day. Some years ago a team of juniors from Toronto went to play in the very first Youth NABC in Atlanta and tried the ACBL's travel agent. That agent wanted to send them from Toronto to Chicago to Houston to Atlanta and cost several hundred dollars more than the Air Canada, United, or Delta non-stop would have. Maybe they just didn't want Canadian kids to win.

Putain is a very rude thing to call someone in French. A charitable definition might be ‘lady of the evening’. The Italian equivalent would be puttanesca, but the Italians are so darned civilized that they have turned that into a delicious pasta sauce.

It's easy, with Bridgemates. If the last table to finish a round, say three times in a row, is the same table number, then that NS pair is the slow one. If the last table to finish increases by one each time, then it's the EW pair at those tables.

Dunno how Bridgepads do it - never used those.

Depending on how vulnerable Mr. Horton is, the over/under can be either 980 or 1430.

I think it might have been prezident.

Yes, that was it. It didn't get flagged this time because I spelled it with a zed instead of a zee.

Not to mention LMAO and CQTM.

That last comment of mine almost got flagged because it had the p-word in it.

At least we Canadians - English and French - know that poutine isn't the president of Russia.

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old coot, which I am, all y'all really REALLY need to get back to bridge now. The whole lot of y'all. Every single one of y'all.

Who sez Canadians can't speak English, eh?

At the risk of sounding like a grumpy old coot (which I am), we seem to have morphed from impugning Mr. Horton's actions and motives to impugning Mr. Clark's actions and motives - and back and forth and forth and back…

Can we please now get back to actual bridge?

Beg to differ, or quibble, re your statement that there are no longer events called ‘non-life-master’, unless you were specifically referring to NABC's. Alongside the City of Toronto Sectional, January 4-6, 2019, there is going to be an Intermediate/Novice Regional which will feature gold rush events and KO's, and all players in that part of the tournament must have fewer than 750 points AND not be life masters. It is quite possible, theoretically, for a player who plays in enough of these I/N regionals and low-level club games to become a life master without ever playing against one.

Many would agree that we need a radical shift in thinking. The term “Life Master” doesn't mean much when it can be achieved without ever playing against others with that rank or higher.

Maybe a partial solution could be to revamp the pigmentation system so that the various colours refer to the level of the event played in, rather than the type of tournament. So, even at sectionals, A/X overalls get (say) red, B/C/D overalls silver, and lower events including NLM/Gold Rush black. Club points would be unpigmented.

In addition, one could devise a formula where 1 umpigmented point is worth less in calculating a player's total than 1 black, which is worth less than 1 silver, which is worth less than 1 red, etc.

Say the weighting is unpigmented : black : silver : red : gold : platinum = 1 : 2 : 3 : 5 : 7 : 10.
Now you have a truer overall picture of a player's actual past performance, related more to the strength of the field played in, rather than the type of tournament.

You could call this the TOtal Masterpoints Averaged TO Experience System, or TOMATOES.

ACBLScore (or whatever succeeds it) could easily keep track of how may tomatoes each player has, and might even go back a ways and recalculate some number of past years' awards. Games would then be stratified and bracketed by tomatoes, like they are now by masterpoints.

Right now, too many masterpoints aren't worth less, they're just worthless.

Feel free to chuck rotten tomatoes at me (figuratively only, please) if you think this is a rotten idea.

If Mike's suggestion is ever implemented, I fear there will be a very long line at the unobtainium fountain.

As I waded through all the comments on the Horton plagiarism thread, my eyes started to glaze over. That reminded me that it was time for lunch, so I went across the street to Tim Horton's and had a glazed donut. Then I remembered that the exact same donuts are sold at Dunkin and Krispy Kreme. Have I discovered yet another case of Horton plagiarism? Inquiring minds (and empty tummies) want to know. Stay tuned for further developments…

Copying verbatim from any source is plagiarism, period. At my university, students get zero if caught and could even get an F for the whole course and a Disciplinary Notice on their transcript.

Besides which, Wikipedia is not exactly an academic journal, so students who use that as their main source of material, even if properly cited, won't get a good grade anyway.
