To single out Germany when none of the cheaters is a native German & when the only cheaters to confess so far (having done the least ‘damage’ as well) are the ones who were to represent Germany is indeed misleading and unnecessarily inflammatory. If this site wants to promote a more ‘friendly’ tone, I would suggest it starts with thread titles, as heated discussions often spring from inflammatory titles.

I like Germany, the German people and German culture. I admire their industriousness, their innovativeness, their thrift and their love of beer. I wish they'd stand up for themselves more, but they've got a bad case of battered country syndrome.

I would not be troubled in the slightest if overwhelming, incontrovertible proof was discovered that a pair of club game patrons was systematically cheating in a manner similar to Fantunes that they were banned from the ACBL permanently.

To believe otherwise smacks of elitism, imo.

Stephanie - I understood you the same way Peg did, but I'm glad we're all on the same page now.

The cheating ‘culture’ also may have pushed some top pros into retirement (I'm guessing here, I have no info to that effect,) or convinced some bright young kid not to take up the game in earnest. It'd be like in the Lance Armstrong days, if you're a clean (aspiring) bike racer are you really going to give it your all, training every day until you're in agony, just so you can lose to a cheater?

By that reasoning, they ‘took the livelihood’ away from others (more honest pros or wannabe-pros who couldn't match their dishonest results,) by cheating and that makes what they did all the more despicable.

As far as clarifying your position, you just did! I have now decided to renew my membership in the Stevo Fan Club.

Break a leg.

Just for the record, my comment was clarifying a part of Joel's immediately-preceding post, which he has since edited, and didn't come completely out of left field.

Edit: The relevant portion was “It has been implied that Boye's motivation came right after this last Chicago Nationals when they lost to F-S.”

(I still had the unedited comment open in another tab.)

IIRC, I think his motivation came right after this last Chicago Nationals when they BEAT F-S but had a terrible ruling go against them.

I haven't read through the whole thread, but what about voice-recognition software so you could bid/play by calling the bid/card (if you preferred)? Obviously this would only work if the separate room option was chosen.

Unable to agree on whether or not electronic bridge during the finals of major events was a good idea, Jeff and Eric never played together again.

“We're a relatively new partnership & we have no specific agreement here. Would you like to know how I play this sequence with my regular partnerships?” would be 100% full disclosure. I don't like South's answer at all. That being said, I wouldn't have asked the question either.

I'm going to go ahead and call the director instead of try to work out if there was UI and if pass is a LA for N. I would not appeal whatever ruling came back.

That way I CAN ‘save my energies’ for trying to beat 4.

Of course if you were to point that out in Germany, Roy, they'd probably arrest you.

The only fault I could find with this apology is that it's not written in Pirate. (It's International Talk Like a Pirate Day.)

Do tell, Richard.

Everyone cheats at bridge systematically over an extended period of time?

As to the subject of the article, unless you are a pure sociopath, it must indeed be agonizing to watch your friends/teammates put their reputations on the line to defend you when you are guilty.

“It is a tribute to the top players in our game how quickly they vacated these tainted titles and and tournament eligibility once they learned about how they were achieved.”

Some more quickly than others.

I was far far MORE impressed by those who ‘did the right thing’ ‘in tempo’ and then practiced ‘full disclosure’.

I think it's (more than) a little silly to suggest an appropriate punishment at this stage. It's equally silly to let the cheaters (appear to) set their own punishment.

We don't know if overwhelming evidence of their guilt was shared with them privately. We don't know precisely what they did, for how long, etc. We don't know how fully they'll cooperate when their hearing(s) occur.

But yes, it's good they came forward.
