Bidding like this, I could've bid 4 immediately, I know. But still.

1147 with JT7th is also a possibility if you bid 4m with 8 cards, also a valid 3 opening. saying someone “shouldn't have done something” without even knowing what the hand is seems like a rush to judgement to me.

he could have eight clubs without the ace, and that is surely a 3 opening. Or do you only preempt with a solid suit and a stopper on the side, kieran?
@ned at some point, i think all bridge players do is take views on things.

precisely the problem i was thinking - do you double with A or with void here?

It was a practice session. I explained my bidding after and all agreed 3 was probably the better bid. I certainly did not “misbid” my hand.

Perhaps I wasn't clear; my partner was a human being capable of independent reasoning, not an ape.

Agreed. I played this board sitting opposite a relative novice and I didn't really trust her doubles. It went p-1-x-p-2-2-p-p-3-all pass and partner dropped something like QTxx Axx Ax Qxxx. Diamonds were 5-1 so I it was just.

Does partner have four spades in your opinion?

2-X = , as if auction went 2-X
2-p-2-p-p-X =
2-p-4-X = likely and another, but undiscussed

Since 2 can only be weak, assume same values as with normal W2's.

How is he supposed to know whether he wants to play 4X?

0+ is purely theoretical. I don't remember ever opening 1 with a void, although it is possible (holding AKxx KJxx - 10xxxx). Precision 1 is not as nebulous in practice as it might seem.

I would be pretty embarrassed sitting East after 4 came back to me. Second X is plain inexperience, IMO. West is the true tragic hero of this board.

Important corollary; would you rather open 1 and tell partner you thought you had an extra king, or open 2 and tell partner you got your s and s mixed up?

Pretty much the same hand came up recently, and again I was preempted. I held A QJ10x AKxx Axxx in 4th seat and LHO open 3. I was stunned.
