I have not looked at the videos. But it occurs to me that the time to omit a signal might be when a suit was shown in the bidding, promising 5 or more cards

Jürgen Dueball was an IM at Chess when that was a big accomplishment, due to the paucity of chances to earn the title, compared to today. He represented Germany many times internationally. He was several times European Go Vice-Champion, and earned national titles in Bridge.
I play all these games, but he was better than me at all of them, the biggest gap being in Go, where I started very very late.

Thank you for this. I was watching on BBO when, in the middle of the hand, on the way to 3 off, my connection conked out.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!

I am well, thanks for asking, feeling much better now. Anybody got some dried frog pills?

Well, Israel sure did what one could hope for. PBU did nothing we could see. We don`t read Polish, most of us. In the meantime most of the Polish players commenting here have realized that something fishy was going on with with B-Z, and any doubters remaining are entitled to their doubts (even if I can`t see where any doubts are coming from, but that is just a personal opinion.

But lets face it:whether a team is withdrawn or not is a matter of the federation. Oh, the players could refuse to play on, sure, and bury their future in the PBU with it. They have to play, they have to eat and sleep, and in the short time remaining they may think about playing on, resigning, what have you. The federation has a team which, against much adversity (sure, their fault to play with people who like to touch other people`s dummies, and transmit ( or so it seems to be) some useful information, but read the posts by (among others) ofSabine Auken and Roy Welland) qualified for the quarter finals. Honest people for all we know (and I believe). Are you prepared to tell them: Well played, but we withdraw you? Israel did so before the event, well done, but have some heart for people who, thousands of miles away from the venue, are asked to tell people: you did well, but it was in vain?

We all wish they did, but could we if it was our responsibility to do so? I have no idea whether I could…
Sure, Poland may not have qualified. Then again, from their results in the round robin, they very probably would. We will never know.

So, sitting at home (as I do), or in your Indian hotel room, as others do, are you prepared to say: Yes, we would withdraw this team? I wish I could, but I am not prepared to say that I am sure I could, under the circumstances. A couple of days earlier, and Israel, Monaco, Germany have shown how it should have been done, and was. But when it is too late to add another team?

If I were chairman of the German federation, would I withdraw a team containing someone I considered my friend before different foci in our bridge lives pulled us apart ( I directed several tournaments with Alex Smirnow, who could have become an excellent director, had he chosen that path) and several people I consider my friends, or at least, having had not much contact with them, have no bias against them? I wish I could… I am not put to the test, as are most (if not all) of us here. I cannot honestly say that I know what I would have done. Oh yes, they cheated, no mercy. OK, and the others? Here you are, in Chennai, if you don`t play, or if your federation withdraws your team, how would you feel? I am _very_ thankful that I don`t know…

We wish that certain things would have been different. I don`t ask you to applaud all that has occurred (or hasn`t, for that matter…), I only ask you to try to put yourself in the shoes of the people I mentioned. If you can honestly say that you would have done different, more power to you. I wish I would have done different, but I am not prepared to say I could have done. I am human. I am only responsible for a couple of hundred players in my club, not for thousands in my federation, and I am glad that this is the case….

Gonzalo,
the Doctors sure had other methods, too. I am not so sure whether they changed their methodes, but them coming up in the discussion reminded me of something.
B-Z have been described here (by people who met them, which I (IIRC) have not) as being “characters, many mannerisms, volatile at times” and so on. I am quite sure that the Doctors used Entscho`s antics to hide what they were doing. I don`t think they developed the antics while cheating, but used them, anyway. Maybe this is something B-Z do, too? I wouldn`t know, I have only seen them on video, as far as I can remember.

A lot of “inhabitants of NBO boards” (nice wording) are unqualified and unprepared for what is happening right now. Surely unprepared, no one saw that coming. Unqualified? I don`t know, I can only speak about my NBO. My “boss” is a lawyer, not a bad qualification to have with the situation we got. But most of it is “learning on the job”. And it is not only laws, it is diplomacy, it is will, there are so many facets to this. No one was prepared, no one was really qualified. Where should that qualification have come from? What is needed is a will to fight the situation we have, That has been lacking in my NBO for quite some time. I believe that it is there now, but it will succed only if we support each other. I am going to look at the sites you mentioned. Probably my NBO leaders will, too, maybe after I and/or others active here point them in that direction. To paraphrase a well-known politician (at least where I come from): We are faced with many challenges in the future, United, and only united, we may surmount them…

Very probably you need to be able to read Polish, too. I can`t imagine they discuss in English. Why should they? So, if anything should turn up there, maybe anyone here from Poland, or just able to read it, could bring us up to date?

I can see why you feel apprehension. But look at it from a different perspective: it might well be that the Chennai tournament will be hailed as a turning point, and remain in our memory as such.

I move that we collectively sentence Artur Malinowski to pay a drink to Roy Welland.

Just an hour ago (shopping this evening`s dinner) I thought about some of his comments and found them misguided. And then here I read that apparently he thinks so himself. Not only that, but he owns up and apologizes. This is a rare thing to behold, and in this forum I have been witness to such remarkable actions several times in the few days I am a member here.

You could have done so in private, but not only did you do it publicly, you even created a thread. Well done.

Let this be a lesson to anyone who - like me - tries to form an opinion about someone`s personality from forum comments. I was wrong.

I shudder at the thought that there could be ways of unethical behaviour the Doctors did _not_ have in their repertoire. I don`t want to see something “new”..

I have seen Ulrich Wenning this weekend, I was TD at the Seniors Pairs Championship, he was a player. He started the event by announcing that the team was withdrawn from Chennai, that P/S had confessed, and that nothing more specific was known to him ATM.

That man is HURT….

This is probably going to cost him a couple years off his lifespan…

He may not have handled the “Doctors” case to best effect (I do not have all facts, especially those regarding laws. He is a lawyer, I haven`t the first idea about all that), but he seems to be dedicated to keep as much damage away from Bridge and the federation as he can, and he means what is written above.

So do I. He has won more events, so they seem to be cheating worse against him…

Only joking, I am simply not in his class :)

I met Björn Fallenius a couple of times, (he may not remenber, the wine in Austria is quite good after the tournament), he had only good things to say about Peter.

I am sure he hasn`t forgot your name, you don`t win championships if your memory is _that_ leaky. I am sure he meant no offense.
Chip Martel has replied to this thread, his argument seems valid to me. Not all “wrongdoings” mean that someone cheated. I was not there, I can`t comment on the hand in question, but it seems to me that having a drink together the next time you meet could remove some bad blood. Myself I have held grudges against other players a couple of times, only to learn that there was another side to the medal, and that - with a different viewpoint - one can understand the other person. Not always, true, but often.

Hi Sveinn Runar, long time no see, as they say.
I have played with screens at a championshio in August, not so long ago. Some inexperienced players (as Peter must have been then) tried to pass the tray (wanting to be helpful ,I belive), being E (I played N all the time when we were N/S, my partner wanting me to handle the bridgemate :) ). I told them not to do that, as it would damage their side if they did something wrong. This usually worked. I do not not know Chip Martel personally, so I can`t comment in any meaningful way, but it seems wrong to me too to let Peter (whom I also have never met before) handle the tray and complain afterwards. OTOH, I can`t condemn a player whose account I have not heard.
