Interesting Karen. I think I've played mostly that when they rebid their original suit, double here is extras/no good bid (if a new suit, penalty). Of course, as usual, I'm not sure what's best. :)

“What type of dictator like moderator would take no action to M.K when he said “take your rights and stick them where they belong”?”

Timo, I didn't actually say what you put in quotes, I don't mind in this case, but don't think it's a great idea.

Point I would make is this… I said that I think the flagging system is lousy. Greg responded by saying (basically) that I could use it also! Should I say “thanks” or should I say what's really on my mind? Do you really want a forum where I have to be PC and pleasant even when I'm miffed at someone's dismissing my point?

Well Brian…it's at least nice to know that you can read my mind. I don't know Dean at all. I don't want to see him do (or not do) anything. My comments were simply directed at the methodology used on BW. I also understand, as I've said many times, this is not under my control - it's up to BW and the flaggers. I did think I had a right to an opinion though. Sorry if I misunderstood how the forum works here.

Now you know why I posted this Josh…time to get away from the “low” stuff

Reading the link, apparently nobody can define censorship….or perhaps everyone can. I didn't know there were undefined words out there. Learn something new every day.

Hi Ian, I don't think I wrote very clearly…sorry. The opps did balance with double and respond 4, but that's where it ended, laydown for 6. They bid, just not enough.

Oops, you're right Michael…I'm sure LHO was a good 0454, I guess LHO had a 1543 that probably should have entered the first time but didn't.

It is interesting (to me anyway) that when I first thought about this I was thinking, “hang ‘em high”. Fortunately I live with a more sober and wiser young lady who happens to think way better than I. She easily (why is she so good at that?) convinced me that Boye’s pragmatic approach was both correct and obvious. She actually had posted something along those lines early on in the story. Nice to have some good thinkers around here. :)

Apologies for arriving so late to the discussion (was involved foolishly elsewhere). I had a similar ethical type situation which I've always felt bad about.

I was playing in the Transnational in Sao Paulo, Brazil 2009, partnering Roy Welland, with Sabine Auken-Daniela Von Arnim and Christal Henner-Steve Garner as teammates. One of the best times I ever had playing bridge. We come to the final match of the RR and are in contention for a spot in the KO (I believe 8 teams in that one, not 16). We are playing a Swedish Senior team - all very good players.

Playing behind screens and every imp was crucial.

I held: T76532 62 A4 832 and Roy opened 3 in first seat both vul and the next hand passed. Tray was passed to us with these two bids. I was sort of surprised by the turn of developments and had to decide what to do. After quite a while I made what I thought was an intelligent bid. I passed.

See, I thought the opps quite likely had a slam opposite an anywhere near normal vul vul preempt. I felt that if I passed, the balancing double (likely) would make it more difficult for either player to act aggressively. I was proved right when LHO had a good 0454 and RHO had a bare opening with 2533 (as I recall). In any case Roy had AKJ98x in some 6322 with no other honors. We managed it just right with Roy's opening and my pass, but did I cheat LHO by taking my sweet time? Maybe he'd have taken a chance over partner's advance…I still don't know….

Nat, I like the comments where I say to myself, “wish I'd said that” :)

Sven, the post and comments above referred to Mario Fonzo.

Shoot Alex, I've got at least two bits left…maybe I'll save it for some actual bridge discussion though. I'm sure we all end up repeating ourselves after a time. Peace… :)

Ken, I am rarely dogmatic about bridge since I make a mistake every other hand. Never understood how anyone has ego about that. Here, I have a strong opinion…should I really behave like I don't? I'm no more staunch than you are even if we have different views. In fact I respect everyone here (Alex, Josh, Greg, you, etc…) and respect their opinions. My sarcasm comes purely from a comedic place and simply because my belief is strong. Not that it matters but, no offense intended. :)

Well I believe the award referred to sportsmanship at bridge…I didn't realize I had to watch my “tone” on forums like this in order to deserve it. Perhaps it should be rescinded. Makes lots of sense Alex.

What did he say that was “offensive”? I read through his comments and didn't find anything that couldn't just be ignored.

Geez - if he wrote this about me I wouldn't be offended. I'd either dismiss him as silly or agree with him. I'm betting Thomas, being one of the candidates for best player in the world, can take strong, provocative commentary from someone beneath his level.

By the way, that's exactly my desired BW. At least it's real and not PC.

As a close friend of mine has taught me Ken…the world is upside-down. You don't know the half of it. :)

Just remember Melanie - the powers that be (behaving as humans, not Gods…or so I'm told) can decide whether someone is allowed to play or not.

As I said above Steve - it's your ballgame, but no…I wouldn't run this part of it the way you do. I'll tell you something else. I read Eugene's long post below and looked at the links re Dean. Seems like you lost a good contributor on here - I literally couldn't stop laughing - this guy was sharp as a tack!

BW is a great concept…I hate seeing it whitewashed to appease the masses. Individuality makes the ballgame better.
