Wouldn't you call 1 with a 4-1-4-4

It's unlikely that partner can provide much help in the suit, and those spots are not what dreams are made of…

@ Steve Chen: The black suits 5/5 opened 2.

It went X - 5 - X and all pass.

Voted 3, raise or correct.

In my regular partnership, I would bid 3 transfer, followed by 3

Opener had x KQx Q10xxx KQxx

Responder: Qx AJxxx AKx A10x

Result was 4 making 6…

Over 2, responder bid 3, and opener (wrongly !!!) thought the bid asked for a stopper, and bid 3NT !!!

Responder thought about passing this because of the expected bad breaks, but then bid 4.

Top flight of a A/X stratified Swiss.

After 5, partner will bid 5, and over 5 he will continue with 6

It's a shame that you would not be allowed to bid 8 over their 7/7NT or 9 over their cold 8/8NT…

Partner had Qx AQxx Axx Q9xx.

Any intelligent way to get to 7NT/7/7 ?

At the table, I'm the one who bid 5 with a 2-1-9-1.

My LHO bid 6, which was a top because the board was only played 3 times, and at the other tables West bid 5.

I voted for 5NT, but after a little more thought, I believe 6 is better, as 6 after 6 by partner would both show the strong / two-suiter and the control.

But a fellow wine lover who has represented Canada numerous times at the World Open Team Championships believes that 6 followed by 6 would rather show a hand too strong to bid 6 immediately.

What was your poison, and what is it now ?

You're right.

Sorry about the extra .

And I agree with you as to East's bidding, starting with his Pass over 3.

He had a nice, uncomplicated 4 bid.

And over 4 (whatever it meant), he had a precautious 4 bid…

Table result ?

4 led to +150.

X would probably lead to +400 (unless partner does something stupid).

Partner had x Qxxx Qxxxxx Qx

North passed over 4 with AKQ10xx J98x x xx

This was a funny one.

A lead or the Ace of will lead to +2300.

A small will lead to -1880.

A or will lead to -1640.

East's hand: AKJx Qx xxx Q10xx

Declarer: Qxx AKx AKQJ10x K

Dummy: 1098xx J10xxxx x x

A number of death wishes around the table (except for West).

It was not alerted. Was meant as a transfer, but North simply stated they had not discussed this situation.

I was an opponent. As soon as I saw dummy, I wondered why he had not bid 4.

Ooopsie ! It did not register that West had bid 2 before I answered.

Change my vote to 7 Spades…

Partner had a very strange Pass over 2H.

However, it should have turned out to be golden.

If you bid 4H, he might amazingly trot out the good old 5NT GSF and you would reach 7C.

His hand: Axx J10XX void QJ98xx.

In real life, he bid 4C (!) over 3C, then hesitated for about 3 minutes after partner bid 5C…
