Something I should know but don't: does the ACBL (as opposed to WBF and USBF) have any anti-doping rules, banned substances, etc?

I don't see how you can go back at this point. The Blue Ribbon is finished as a premiere event; sub-basement qualifying standards and getting rid of the 2 section 3 board final was bad enough, but the Soloway has now put the final nail in the BRP coffin. I forget what the Platinum qualifying entails; if it is 1,000 Platinum Points, I guess that at least eliminates Flight Z players, but you are right it should be tougher. All of this leaves the two major KO's and the magnificent, wonderful, pure, beautiful Reisinger, now under attack for only one real reason-too many sponsors are chicken to play in it.

Too young to retire. 6 years is a long time but HOF awaits. Many thanks.

Great stuff, Avon. Keep at it, keep at it, and keep at it. Come on Carlo, tell me what you did. Don't be afraid. Do you think I'd make my sister a widow? Now who approached you…was it Tattaglia or Barzini?

Hi Kevin. God this makes me miss rubber bridge. Resigned from the Regency last year (after 40 years!) because the rubber game just died. Being an asshole at duplicate is nowhere near as much fun. Best to you.

Sorry Richard I was kidding. I thought I recognized this hand from a rubber bridge game in San Francisco circa 1977.

Hi Eric. This is what happens when you play with Reitman. Were you South or North?

In his piece on Crane, Grant Baze used the expression, “brutal murder.” When I ragged him for employing a hackneyed redundancy, he told me about every bone being broken, which shut me up but good. Not 100% certain after all these years, but I think I heard the poker rumor from Don Krauss.

I have been told that when they found Barry every bone in his body was broken. If true, very unlikely it was some random guy on drugs. A psycho hitchhiker maybe, but a MO like that is not likely to quiesce for 34 years. A close and very plausible friend of Barry's heard that he had gotten into a poker game with the wrong people, thought he was being cheated, refused to pay, and was made an example of. As mentioned above, though, it is heartening to know that an arrest has been made and the cops are still on the case.

Is this really the guy? This is going to be a real feast for people into cold case forensics. Maybe next they will find a bloodstained spat or a monocle with fingerprints on it and figure out who killed Elwell.

This makes a lot more sense than paying for a trip to Turkey and taking your chances with the draw. If you find out either of them will be entering, just stay home, and lobby your friends to do the same.

A procedural question: is the proposal that teams defeated during the Soloway knockout phase be able to drop into the BRP, or just the teams that don't make it to the knockout phase? The former stinks; the latter makes sense.

Suggestion: contact Matt Smith, the well known Director. His father was a mathematician who enjoyed working on movement schemes. Years ago I started a domino tournament in San Francisco, and needed to imitate some movements used in the old Individual events. Matt was right there for me. Best to you.

Me, too. Particularly irritating because I had a certain winner this year.

How about calling your movement something that doesn't sound like you're trying to resuscitate a corpse? Keep Bridge Alive is not positive, not even hopeful.

Egad do you think the Foot Soldiers might at some point have sat down against the Manoppos? Would love to have kibitzed that one!

This is awful news. We had dinner last month in Daytona Beach and he seemed in good form and fine spirits. A first class teammate and opponent at the table or on the golf course, and always a first class companion. Very sad.

A very humorous corollary you might work in in some manner is Frank Vine's old Bridge World piece “How I Abolished the Rule of Restricted Choice.”
I hope you can find it somewhere.

They are not in the Reisinger because their sponsors are too chicken to play in the greatest event in Bridge.

Everything has to come to an end sometime, I guess, but after only eight years this is sad news for Grant's memory, not to mention the fifty or so of his friends who chipped in for that beautiful trophy.
