Adam, There was a bridge client in Dallas who worked as a consultant looking at aerial videos for the DOD. He determined whether the milk production facility in Iraq was really producing milk or weapons. Not really sure if that turned out so well.

Nicolas - If you want to give an index with links in a different thread that would be thoughtful.

This chorus from a Bobby Vee song keeps running through my mind when I think of Boye and those who have helped. Cheaters beware!

'Cause the night has a thousand eyes
And a thousand eyes can't help but see if you are true to me
So remember when you tell those little white lies
That the night has a thousand eyes

The scary part of the Robot BBO is the idea of the robots being able to cheat electronically.

Thanks for saying that Jeff. One does wonder about areas of the world where film is not openly available. The crowdsourcing method seems to work quite well I think and we all should lobby loudly in favor of it.

Maintaining something akin to Boye's “Interpol” to be in place for verification of suspicions that arise is also important.

I personally like the idea of not reverting to sheer mathematics at the top levels by using computers (and electronically damped rooms too).

Cancelling because of the major issues that have been found with individual pairs only (NBO incompetence or being an ostrich does not add you to the bad-guy list), is cutting off your nose to spite your face. There is bridge as a whole, which you suggest should just surrender by cancelling the event. And there are the many players who are there to play in perhaps a once in a lifetime situation.

P.S. I do not know Boye … so my statement above comes from reading/listening to all on this website.

Remember Boye is only the organizer now, and he seems to have not gone forward with things without corroborating work from others … hence the term Interpol. I think he seems to have done a good job of creating a solid block of world class bridge players and now comes the time for the powers to be to recognize the good of this and use them and their framework going forward. From what I have seen so far he is not alone. I think scaring the whatever out of those still cheating without naming names goes a long way to righting the long term wrongs. Players in Chennai must know that the world of bridge is now watching with a hundred eyes.

Perhaps bonding to sponsors of bridge professionals is a future endeavor?

It also lowers the average age of bridge players considerably. I would guess many of us who want the game to thrive are happy that it seems to be fairly popular amongst other generations around the world.

CNBC - Poor researchers with no understanding at all. - Newsweek - Good understanding, excellent contextual info and nice writing.

The week after the Chicago Nationals, my heart broke for one of my friends, then soon after my heart broke for the game of bridge. The letter above succinctly expresses the desolation and personalizes that sadness.

Pressure and fear of failure seems also to be a factor in academic cheating.

Marty,
Gaming the system, especially in a game like bridge itself is a factor everywhere in life, I think. Skirting the system vs. out and out cheating sometimes gets blurred in people's minds.

Decision depends on WJS style - personally would not WJS with 2 of top 3 or 3 of top 5 honors. e.g. KQ, KJ10, AJ10. Think that a WJS is primarily destructive.

Dale - thanks - I forgot and I stand corrected. Should have known Georgiana not prone to numerical error. Humbled.

What would pard do with 4 2 3 4 distribution and a decent hand? If they cannot show it with the first dbl (i.e. defense oriented hand), allowing partner to dbl for penalty … then they have to dbl for take out because pard might have 4hts. Since I was knee high to something or other I learned that the double over a two suited bid is defense against the opponents. Except with the BBO robots I cannot remember how long it has been since I played with a partner who thought that showed a fit with my minor.
