Question here is whether partner would dbl 2D with defense only in one major or in both ? I think with the original pass pard is making a takeout bid …

Georgie - I think you are a little zero happy … Half of the US doesn't live in District 16 even if it seems like it in Houston traffic.

There have been pairs trials in the past to pick the best teams. I believe that England and the United States have both run them. And if you think a lengthy pairs trial is “random” take a look who the leading pairs were in the World Event in Philadelphia a few years back. I think the evolution of “sponsorship” and paid teams has more to do with the elimination of pairs trials than their inadequacy to picking an excellent team.

Gary, I donated monies over and above my annual membership to the USBF this year. Thank you for clarifying for me that I will tell the USBF Treasurer that my 2016 donation will be used only for the Women's event.

1st - Let's clarify what represents a national open event - Anything that runs concurrent with the Reisinger, Spingold, or Vanderbilt should not qualify based on putting a value of X+1 on those events where X is any event in which does not carry the same cachet. The Platinum pairs should also qualify as an X+1 event.
2nd - Having played against several of the women mentioned in National Swiss and a few open rated pairs events when they were playing with male counterparts who had won fame and glory thru either winning International Open Teams, or just via reputation … I noted that the woman actually played better than her partner at least half the time.
3rd This really should be a non-issue anyway. A person's long term results and continuing high level of performance is of import in judging their worthiness for admission to the ACBL HOF.

Thanks - I abstained because the bidding rules were a problem … the fact that you cannot show your weak 7-4 is a little strange … if you have a real hand you would continue with the relay first wouldn't you … so that interrupting it shows this hand?

Who is to say what would have happened in the final segment if USA was able to directly confront Germany. The final result was so close with, correct me if I am wrong, a pickup of 9 imps by Germany in that segment and something like an 11 imp difference total over the entire final. That USA was requested not to do this, but had determined the methods in advance of these last boards, means that they would have been thoroughly punished for admirable behavior. In the spirit of fairness and a reward to those who did not cheat but were 3/4, the WBF chose to move all up. To not have done so would have clearly announced that doing the right thing is not ok.

I like to play that splinters in competition can be made on less of a hand with some nice shape/control.

My father was a psych prof whose specialty was tests and measurements. I was often used as his guinea pig for his testing of IQ, Myers-Briggs etc. tests. As I remember as an adjunct to the the Myers=Briggs it was suggested that I was fittest for 2 careers - one was an Air Force Officer and the other was an Art Teacher. Have yet to understand that relationship after 50 or so years. Or what that had to do with my affinity for Bridge.

Does Dean talk like this every day? To his wife/girlfriend/partner, his boss, his parents/siblings? Or does blogging on line give him the courage of his convictions?

If this his constant persona - more power to him. If not, then we are all just a game to him, more so than bridge.

If you presume that partner has other methods to show a singleton club as a passed hand … then maybe 4c is a super fit showing bid like Qxxx xx x AQxxxx? Or is it a void?

Mario - off topic but the current court has ruled unanimously approximately 67% of the time in the latest session, and is one of the most agreed courts in the history of the US - no matter how it is painted by politicians and in the press.

Mark,

Thank You for this clarification. I am hoping that we can retain this event for the future and develop a system similar to the Ryder Cup. For instance picking 8 players (6 persons from open classification based on a total points system based on actual placements in open national events (not necessarily platinum points themselves) and two women also based on the chosen system.

Then we have a team captain who is already independently chosen and 4 more individuals chosen by them. The USBF or some committee of players would be the appropriate group to pick that captain, no matter what individual rancor has been expressed here about anyone.

I am still curious why the matter has died. Whether Jill painted outside the lines or took responsibility beyond her job description ( I am assuming there was no liaison for her to touch base with for a few minutes or so each week), it would seem that just some sort of tweaking of what seems, on the face of her description, adequate work.

Ruffled feathers can be smoothed … is it really too late for that?

Oh - are we talking about building a stadium for bridge?

Having just been dazzled by the NBA Playoffs and Finals this year and being able now later in life to be able to afford 1/2 a season of tickets for teams in my home cities, and currently living in Broncoland, I am not exactly the one to ask.

Anyway, 75K is not a whole lot of money in this day and age. Believe that was the minimum guarantee for each of the Nigerian players to play in the World Cup, was it not?

Anything that brings general happiness to people in their short lives is of interest to me. I am for promoting areas that I think are fun (like learning and playing bridge). And I am willing to pay a small amount of tax for a portion of a seat for someone to represent the US vs. Europe in the Buffet Cup.

By the way, sport is something everyone can participate in, and getting excited about one's team is fun no matter whose pockets are lined. If you look at the world wide viewership of the World Cup and our own smaller Super Bowl, I think many people would choose to agree with me on this.

I think GIB is very good with total HCP but pretty weak on losing trick count and playing points.
