Mario - Based on your theory any old duffer should not want to pay for a ticket to the Masters or a Ryder Cup event.

Nor should we recognize any of those who play for the Ryder Cup or the Davis Cup or for Team USA basketball in the Olympics (or any professional tennis player who plays in the Olympics) as giving specially of their time.

I agree with Peg on this. Just hearing that two very famous people enjoy the challenges of this game is a promotional mechanism. If we could get Beyonce or Renaldo to play bridge that would be even better, but we need to work with what we have - two of the most famous men in the world of Finance/Business.

It was not just in the Bridge Columns that newspapers mentioned Omar Sharif's bridge circus.

To add to the coolness, the team listed includes a player who has won a sizable poker tourney.

I was just confused as to where Lebanon was located as well.

I understand the desire to be inclusive of the Women's team from Lebanon and consider their plight. But lets consider the fact that the Israeli team might be considerably more talented and likely win by a greater ratio than 13:7. That means that as part of being inclusive you are punishing others for being perhaps better at this competition.

I like the idea of a potential upward adjustment based upon the relative performances of both these teams against other teams.
Whatever formula is used can be regularly computed as a side add-on so that all teams see where they stand.

My partner in crime reminded me of the hand where his GIB partner doubled 7NT with an Ace and did not lead it. I think they must have fixed that by now.

It is not nearly as elegant as Jim's hand but has no logic attached to it whatsoever.

Good place to play some sort of two way raises (limit vs. forcing.
Am betting on pard having some heart cards (no dbl from RHO) and guessed on his/her having an opening hand as well (apparently I was wrong). So 3S leaves things open. Maybe pard would bid 3NT over that … might be a good place to play.

Thanks Peg. Some of this was getting a lot like reading Lewis Carroll.

Not everyone who works constantly can get to club games which cost 8-10 times that of an online game. Additionally, one can practice more easily in that setting and actually sometimes get better opponents than in a daily club setting. There is also the issue that some of us have illnesses that sap stamina and make travel difficult or impossible.

Although I have the higher level qualifications to become a grand life master, I will likely not become one because illness keeps me away from many tourneys.
I also had a very demanding job and chose to travel and be outdoors during the valuable vacations I had rather than play bridge before I retired. I can count the number of Nationals I have played in almost exclusively on my fingers and my toes.

For you to decide that earning points online is not a reasonable way to earn masterpoints is essentially merely a judgement call. I have played in senior center games that had huge fields which were no better than online robots and that better players used as turkey shoots to try to get their names into the bulletin and to receive the honor of Club Master.

Pard with AK A A should think long and hard about bidding 7C over 6c. Over 5c he might think you have early save going . I might bid 5C on same hand without A of hts. How high would you bid on a very light hand with both majors after multi by pard followed by dbl?

So pard had the magic hand - and your kxx was not in one of the majors - I am curious if all would have bid the same way with kxx xx xxx kjxxx? or Kxx xxx xx Kjxxx?

Pass - Don't give them help, information or speed them along.
All I can see bidding 2NT or 3C on a pretty balanced hand is to allow a nice free bid by LHO at the 3 level when he might have bid 2 only of the major. Partner knows you are likely to have cards in the minors anyway.

All - I think that forward linear programming and decision trees is easier to program than looking back at info and applying it forward to change the decision rules. Hence the excitement when we get robots who learn from prior experiences. Or those that understand analogies and jokes (aka Watson).

It's good dummy play practice. And my choice is to sit at home and watch the NBA playoffs and play with the GIBs without them being upset because I took time out to replay a certain play on the TV or go raid the fridge.

I actually posted to the GIB Discussion Board on this one but haven't seen a responding post back:

GIB: xx, xxxx, 9xxx, xxx
Opener (me): Axx, AQ9, K108x, KJx

Auction:
1NT - p - p - 2D (Majors)
Dbl (diamonds per GIB) - p - 3D? - p
p - 4H - Dbl (We can actually beat that) - p
p - 4S - Dbl (We cannot beat that) - All Pass

Okay - some might not like the Dbl of 2D but at GIB this is good way to get to Dia if it is right or maybe even to Clubs
Sometimes GIB will even lead the suit for which you doubled - but don't hold your breath.

I recommend that one view the films of the last 32 boards which have been posted on You Tube. Follow along with the actual hands. It is just like filming a bank robbery. That with some corroborating info from the Cavendish should be enough to convict.

In the US a mere change of venue request is not enough to actually change venue. The WBF might have offered to pay airfare to both the President of the DBV and the offenders if they could not afford to appear.
But just like most courts and decision making bodies there are a limited number of trained officials who can form a adjudicating body.

Again, watch the tapes. I believe many of the members of teams representing different countries in the world have already done so and see no doubt as to what happened and the methodology used.

Ms. Simple - find out if we have a ht fit then bid 4c keycard and then qbid dia.
If no fit then show dia slam interest. If pard bids 3NT - will then bid 5NT - I am going to slam somewhere but pard has to decide level and where. Could be cold for 7 clubs if pard has 5 clubs or even 4 very good ones.
