Hi David,
Just in case you dont know, Harry had many descendants : see the biography of his son Sylvan, all the descendants are quoted. One of them surely knows about the Harry's collection. A grandson lives always in San Angelo, where was Harry.

It is very curious, very strange that the author of the post gave us only one hand to judge the auctions. I suspect the hearts are something as ADVx and Rxxxxx or ARVx and 10xxxxx.

When I write “natural”, it is with a weak hand.

About 3 Hearts, I think there were three different periods in France.
In the old days : natural.
After : super-forcing ( not splinter).
And today, a tendency to be natural (4 Hearts is of course splinter).
I really think 3H splinter was never a trend in France.

Biritch (more exactly known as “Britch”)and Bridge (or simple Bridge or Straight Bridge, after also called Whist-Bridge) are the same game. In bridge or biritch/britch, a mandatory dummy but no auction, and existence of “Double/Redouble”. You have to not make a confusion between Bridge, Auction Bridge and Contract Bridge (of today).
Vint is a russian whist, closer to an older game, Boston (a 100% french card-game, in spite of its name): no dummy, but auctions by all the players.
Yeralash is a “proto-bridge”, no auction, and very important the dummy is only an option. Double and redouble possible.
It's a short resume, there are others differences between these games, but all, biritch, boston, yeralash and vint include the possibility of playing notrump (In Boston, the first edition was without notrump).

There is practically nothing in this book on the first appearances of bridge. But for the general history of bridge, the book is a good compilation

Bridge was known in Romania in the end of the 1860'-I have several proofs-, before it was introduced in Constantinople in the beginning of 1873. And it was said that the game came before from Russia. (It was exact, the bridge game is only a variation of a russian whist, Yeralash)
In January 2018, I discovered a new testimony : a well known Greek, about 1900 member of the “Cercle d'Orient”, the famous club of Constantinople, wrote that in the part of his family established in Romania (I verified, it is true that his family was a very large landowners and big traders in Galatz and Braila), they played bridge as soon as 1869. The date is precise, but I dont know why he was so certain of it. He quoted precisely one of the players, who spent some time in Russia.
So, you could consider, with my current knowledge of the history of bridge, that the birth of bridge dates back to the 1860's.

Avon,
After Orlando, where it will be possible to buy your book in Europe (Amazon ? = no yet reference)? Australia (Lavings) is not a very good plan for us. I need at least 3 copies.

Hi Ken,
The reference I had somewhere in my archives did not say “binned”. At my time, I'll research the exact word.
So, as the english language is very subtle, “borrowed definitively” is perhaps better that this coarse word, stolen !

Thank you very much, Peter.
Yesterday, I asked Tim Bourke and he told me : “I know of no one who has seen the Barbey booklet”
And alas, it is the second time that I notice there is an incunabulum of the bridge game without surviving copy (the other is certainly the first auction bridge booklet, a french book of circa 1899)

I know there was a framed copy of the book in the old Whist club of NYC, but it seems it was stolen.

I cannot understand that “The best of Bridge” by Mollo and Jannersten (An introduction to the Wohlin Collection, 1973), is not in your list.

I am OK with you, Mike. Note that I said “German” as a general word (from the German Saint Empire), I did not speak of Germany, a state which did not exist at this time.

Surely not.
The parents of Mozart were German, Amadeus was born German.
It is exact that he was born in Salzburg, but at this time Salzburg was not Austrian but German !
You can verify.

Peter,
"Austrians would now have you believe that Hitler was German and Beethoven Austrian. As you know, the reverse is true.”

No, the common idea of the Austrians is that Hitler was German and Mozart Austrian.
And of course, only the reverse is true. (Many people in the world wronly think Mozart is Austrian)

conventional : it is minimum with or without spade control and at least 2 keys.
3NT would be spade control, not minimum as 4C and 4D
