Current ACBL handicap is based on players' masterpoint that is not a reflect of player's skill. The handicap is probably calculated based on data from 30-40 years ago when masterpoint really meant something, but is totally inadequate now.

The handicap is based on an expected score calculated from players' rating taking into account of movement data (who you play against and who else play the same board). You could also try to score players only against those in their own rating group, so you could have winners for master, expert, class A, B etc.

@Jeff, if you are interested in how a rating system could do for club, you could take a look at the rating system implemented for the Commongames.

Some clubs use it to do seeding. Others use the handicap derived from rating to score the game and provide alternative ways to reward players.

Should it be every board having equal weight? If so, why do we need game bonus, slam bonus and vulnerability? We could just score every board the same way.

This is probably more to do with how bridge is taught. I did not learn bridge in US but in China 40 years ago. When I learnt it we always scored in IMP. IMP score has a different strategy where game and slam are more important.

When I first played MP game in US I was not used to it. It took me several years to learn and find correct strategy. I think most US players would have the similar feeling when they first play IMP score since they are used to MP.

Other players mentioned IMP pair may have a large variance. This could be true. I have posted some study of my rating system where I rate MP and IMP differently. The IMP games are very limited but the preliminary result indicates the variance from a 28 board session is larger than MP game.

The implication of this might be complicated. On one hand the large variance means a lot of players would be competitive in the game and have a chance to win. On the other hands some players may not like it.

I think the root cause is player's skill in MP game does not equal to the skill in IMP game. My experience in playing against different level of players suggests that flight B and C players are often more aggressive in bidding games than flight A players. This would be the correct strategy for IMP score. Since the current flight designation is based on player's masterpoint accumulation, a flight A player who gets his masterpoint from MP game might be just an average skilled player in IMP game.

Jan, China Eastern has direct flight from San Francisco to Qingdao. I found it from flychina.com. The round trip ticket for next Feb is about $660. No price for next October yet.

The strength of opponents certainly matter. A better method is a proper rating system. I had a post a few years back. On page 2 you could find data from 2005 Bermuda Bowl.

I use Chrome. Is there any indicator which game has voice? The new display is also confusing because it does not show which one is BB, VC etc.

Could someone tell me how to access voice commentary on Vugraph? I tried every table last night but could not find voice commentary.

In addition, how do you “undo” when you play? I could not find it in the new GUI menu. “BBO help” does not help either.

The “new” BBO seems to lack of a lot of features the old one had. For team match when I create a new match in old one and someone did not accept in time. I could simply resend invitation by click the same button. With “new” one it lost all the information and I have to re-type in EVERYTHING. In addition when I search a team match by typing the name, it filtered the results and showed the list I wanted, but within a couple seconds it reverted back to the long list of matches without my filter.

But holding is not good after opponent's overcall. suit is too weak. Partner is a passed hand.

That would be invitational and partner could raise to game. Here I just have minimum for my opening.

I think the 4 teams who didn't want our defenses were mostly foreign players. They were a little surprised when we gave them the suggested defense paper.

Because the law “protect” them so nobody could use this opening against them.

I have an interesting experience using multi. Early this year in Memphis NABC, we played an AXY Swiss. We used multi. We were required to provide a written defense. Three of the team we played against took the printed defense. Four other teams told us they don't need it. The results were we won against 3 teams that took written defense and lost the other 4 matches.

I blame pros and ACBL teachers for it. If you all teach your clients and students to play it, there will be enough players.

I use 2 to show hands with 5-5 two suits and one suit is . 2 is 5 + 5m, 2NT is 5-5 in minors. So I could open any 55 two suits.
