I agree this is crucial and it duplicates the process in place. The primary reason for talking at the table is to ask further questions at the table when an explanation is given. But as time develops each pair will have FAQs available that have been answered on many occasions in prior events. I would visualize in a sense that each pair will now have their own “Cloud” so that they carry with them a downloaable (virus free) information set including their CC and a more detailed (if needed) explanation of their conventions. This also leads to “answers” that are always the same another good point for the system and Transcends language issues

scroll to 7 minutes and Then Eight minutes in FS at eight minutes FN at seven minutes

then an interview with Lotan Fisher

Assuming THE ACCUSED FN AND FS ARE GUILTY then they answer to category one:
1) They are psychopaths or sociopaths.

Among the characteristics of this group are that

a) they are without conscience or

b) they don't feel or care about the pain they inflict on others, or

c) they do not get anxious and upset as we would, and so they can cheat without deterring emotion or guilt or shame.

NO shame!
No Guilt!
NO care!
No Conscience!

Is software like this available? It may very well address some of the Naysayers issues!

This is good news!

I think we have many High level players who are willing to put forward (and already have) their help in a project like this.

As a temporary solution (perhaps there will be better solutions) This may help secure the game and instill more confidence in our Events

Do you think this is a 10/20 year process (to experiment with a few tables say round of 4 or round of 8) ?

Are there any other suggestions to help “secure” the game that you know of and would be willing to share?

Nice to see you weigh in on the discussion.

The proposal is not on “electronic Bridge” for all of Bridge. The proposal is limited to the Last few rounds of Major events.

The last 15 years (based on the future findings of the WBF and NBO) may well have produced upwards of 45 NBO and WBF titles which are now in question !!! The next 10/20 years could produce even more invalid titles.

Unfortunately I believe the credibility of these events may;
1. Undermine the Value of WORLD and National TItles
2. Undermine the Value of the basic currency of Bridge -The Masterpoint
3. Undermine the players confidence in Bridge Organizations as we know them today

I personally believe that the effects of the few last weeks and the last year have produced
5 incidents of Top level Bridge that bring to the forefront a problem which must be addressed
in less than 10-20 years. I do not envy the people in administration, like yourself, that are dedicated to
the “preservation” of the Game. Unfortunately, the “Bridge World” at large is looking to the two organizations you represent
for “Action” …..and not in 10/20 years. This would and may well cause damage to the game beyond imagination.

As one of the players who “might” be using a system like this your input is extremely valuable. No new technology can survive which is “uncomfortable ” to use. The input that has come from the discussions has been invaluable and I am hoping that as the various NBo's and WBF formulate a constructive plan for the future it is one that Works and meets the requirements of the top echelon of our game

We have offered to try to “help” with a solution that is in no way perfect. The Bridge World should not have to wade through 15 years of “stolen titles” And full credibility must be restored as quickly as possible to our sport.

I took a quick glance and noticed that your teams had taken 2nd place to FN in 2011 and 2012 Spingold and 2014 Reisingers. That is an awful lot of “pain” , in now way should a system designed to stop this cause any “more” pain.

Sorry for a slow response. To answer this fully I would like to have my team (BMI team)
look at your suggestions closely. I WILL GIVE IT A GO IN CAPS (ONLY TO SET ASIDE THE ANSWERS PROPERLY)

Bob, if it were inevitable that this idea were to be implemented,
I would want a much more comfortable experience than I
envision with iPads and mice (handheld or on the computer).

TRY THE BELOW:

DEPENDING ON THE LAYOUT OUR NETWORK COULD HAVE ONE CPU AND INPUT/OUTPUT (I/O) CONNECTIONS TO SCREENS AND KEY BOARDS. FYI I WOULD SUGGEST A PRIVATE -PUBLIC -PRIVATE ENCRYPTION WITH PRIVATE KEYS BEING VALID FOR ONE SESSION WITH A MIN OF N 20TH complexity (Imposiible with todays to hack IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME) KEYBOARD AND SCREEN NOT PARTICULARLY EXPENSIVE, AND CPU REQUIRED TO HANDLE I/0 IS NOT EVEN A $2000.00 ITEMS FOR ALL TABLES.

I would want a comfortable chair and an ergonomic large screen
set up on my right (since I'm right-handed), such that I'm touching
the screen at about shoulder level, my estimate of maximum
comfort. My cards would be spread out on the screen like a real
hand. I could adjust how wide the cards appear (i.e. how much
of each card face I see as opposed to just the corners, like in
real bridge). I could choose to resort the cards relative appearance
on the screen at any point in the hand. I CANNOT SPEAK TO THE CHAIR(ALTHOUGH MOST HOTELS DO HAVE MORE COMFORTABLE CHAIRS AVAILABLE IN MEETING ROOMS)
BUT THE
APPEARANCE OF CARDS AND SCREEN IS BY NOW MEANS COST PROHIBITIVE

During the bidding, my hand decreases in size a bit to accommodate
the bidding screen. NO mouse or keyboard clicks should ever be
required. The bidding “summary” should look like a tray sent
back and forth in current screen play (maybe something else
will work just as well here). My bids look just like a bid box and
are EASY to touch the “tabs” like in current bidding boxes to
select my bid/call. AGAIN HERE A MATTER OF PROGRAMMING, IM SURE SOME PEOPLE WILL PREFER KEYBOARDS AND MOUSE. THE BEAUTY OF THIS IS THAT MORE THAN ONE I/O METHOD IS AVAILABLE TO USERS WITH THE CLICK OF THE MOUSE!!!!

On the issue of misclicks (now mistouches) I say: every bid
or play is isolated as though about to bid bid or played, and
the computer asks you to “confirm” or “cancel”. If you
confirm it is a “done deal”. You ARE allowed to make
insufficient bids, revokes. You wouldn't be able to bid or play
out of turn. A POSSIBLE APPROACH

The interface for the play of the cards would look like a table
with large enough cards to read easily. I could touch any
other player's bid or play and have it read out to me verbally
by the computer if I need to rest my eyes or am visually
impaired. Any player should be able to see the previous
trick by clicking on a “review previous trick” button.

Alerts and explanations are done verbally so we need very
good voice recognition software. Some might wish to
have the option to type this in if they are proficient typists.
I would, if conditions allowed it, be able to ask my opp
who is not in the room for an explanation but I do NOT think
that trying to exploit minor differences in explanations
should be encouraged. NOTE: if it was deemed essential
to ask something that your in-room opp couldn't hear
then you would have to type it in. THE VRS SOFTWARE IS PRETTY GOOD THESE DAYS
AND TEXT TO VOICE IS EVEN BETTER..

The computer would of course record the relevant data about
tempo and who played what as is proposed.

After the deal I can have a brief conversation with my partner.
It should be confined to compliments or needed “agreements
clarification”.

I'm sure this is not a complete list but there it is. I doubt this
is feasible economically at the moment, and perhaps not
technically, but that is what I would want if I am to play
under these conditions. Let me say again:
prefer live play but the above would be enough to make
me at least want to try it.

THE WORLD CHANGES VERY QUICKLY THESE DAYS. TECHNOLOGY AS YOU WELL KNOW IMPROVES QUICKLY.

JUST A NOTE ON COSTS (OTHER THAN THE ONES MENTIONED IN ORIGINAL POST)
1. WHAT ARE VIDEO TAPES COSTING TODAY?
2. HOW MUCH IS THE RECORDER SYSTEM COSTING ?
3. HOW MANY $$$ WERE SPENT ON PROFESSIONALS WHO MIGHT HAVE BEEN
UNETHICAL?
4. HOW MANY $$$ WILL BE SPENT ON LAWSUITS?
5. WHAT WILL THE NBO AND WBF INVESTIGATIONS COST?
6. WHAT IS THE COST OF OVER 30 INVALID WORLD AND NBO TITLES NOT IN $$$$
BUT IN CREDIBILITY.

I THINK YOU CAN SEE THAT A COMFORTABLE SCREEN AND EASY TO USE SOFTWARE AND EQUIPTMENT WILL BE FAR LESS COSTLY THAN WHAT IS PRESENTLY BEING SPENT.

In no way was this directed to you or anyone else in particular ! I have played with you and against you on many occasions over almost 35 years if the world of Bridge was made up of players like yourself and Eric it would be a more friendly place for all !!! If the World of Bridge could do away with whispers it would be a better place to live!! If the world of Bridge can get past this dark period it will be a better place to live!!! If the world of Bridge can restore faith to the Titles we all hold it would be a better place to live!!!!

My apology if this was taken in the wrong way!

You have hit the nail on the head. Should Body Language be part of this game at the Top Level?
If a throw of a card, an Attitude “ in play or anything like that soething we ever want to decide a World CHampionship? If the ”feel of the Table" is so very important at the top level is it possibly worth 15 years of winners who may not have won without an extra edge!!!!

A great Post! Although I did not expect for “our” post to lead to this discussion.

As you well know some “players” may use tactics to put their opponents off guard .
Play (as declarer a card out of tempo and look for a reaction) Is this “Ethical”?

Is “table Feel” out of the parameters of “Unethical Behavior”

a card played slow or fast we always complain about.

In fact some players say “I always take my time at trick one” as a warnig"
If we dispense with this have we ruined Bridge? Is it a different game?

I think that a good discussion among Bridges top players and respected players like yourself will lead to many varied answers on the subject

Michael Quite right …A better mousetrap is needed than we have today. I believe strongly that in the same way bridge has evolved (Bidding etc) The Defenses must also evolve. Larry Cohen has also proposed a “method” to identify “potential” another great idea. At the same time, the Bridge World needs to be comfortable that the “results” of the last fifteen years can not repeat. I am strongly in favor of developing systems to fight system (“Spy versus Spy if you will as LC as suggested)

That being said , we have terrific minds at work here, who love this game and perhaps ”prevention“ can be a good cure toward a positive end.

The ”mousetrap“ we have has taken many a title away from Hardworking deserving players and in fact has even perhaps tarnished the ”Old" Cavendish reputation. and moreover the reputation of The Bridge World in the eyes of the world at large. Just as The tour de france had its reputation tarnished , and the Steroid use in sports has taken away many a record

In 2002 FN won the world pairs…This is 2015…. very very sad. If the Screens are outmoded …Change them …evolve. If it does not work change again ….preserve the Game we love and keep the reputation of Integrity and sportsmanship that it deserves

Deja Vu

The Cavendish Concept presented was directed toward a very small (but very important) section of the Game.
A test until perhaps a better method is found to help keep the integrity of Bridge at the top for the Players, our Community and The world at large.

Circa 1981 - Screens go into the Cavendish- The number of people that said we had changed “the nature of the game” and said they refused to play…..They played and it became a way of life at the Cavendish Bridge Table (not the world of the rest of Bridge)
Circa 1997- BBO Vu Graph will allow too much information being passed. The Cavendish persisted Voila!
