What was the EW agreement? E.g. was it a bad alert or west just forgot?

Hurrah! I felt 4 (my bid) might have been a little extreme at the table, used to get in trouble with bidding too much on hands like this. Glad to get a lot of 4 bidders

No special agreements, so in this partnership ugly as it sounds 2NT would probably be natural (!), 3 some kind of good raise, 3 undiscussed

Interesting this is definitely a double for me but thought I might get more passers. Guess you have to change the J to T to make it interesting.

Yeah I passed too, thought I needed a club spot or something else more entry-looking than a J, but I sometimes learn a fair bit from polls like this, interesting to me that the majority are bidding. Still happy with my pass but thinking about this one.

Michael this is great, I definitely look for a simpler way to teach friends bridge that they can just get playing and have fun. Will give this a try. Keep posting stuff like this please!

Follow-up: if you open 1C (or 1D), LHO overcalls 1H, partner passes, and RHO raises to 4H. Are you done?

If it's anything less than an NABC I think this is normal, they're probably just not great players. Would just ask what the double is and get on with it.

Giorgio, considering also reposting on the school bridge club facebook page? Hope you get takers

Awesome and totally agree. Chess clubs usually allow you to drop in and just play, don't have to play a tournament game. No bar there, but it couldn't hurt :). Having a fun evening atmosphere would be great.

This is one of my personal soapboxes, hope you can keep the night games at least as a public good type thing. Juniors + working folks often can't play any other time.

Follow-up: what is your plan if the opponents compete to 4? Does this affect your bid now?

Come to think of it you would have been more than a little sad if the guy bids 5 over XX, no? :P

Agree I think the comment about XX was clearly off base but these kinds of misconceptions are normal at the club. For me this is in the category of move on and laugh about it at the bar after the game.

PMing you who partner is. That sounds like a reasonable minimum to me.

Now there’s a put down you don’t hear too often , I’ll have to break it out next time partner makes a wet bid

Sure thing Jonathan, sounds like you are handling this well. Let us as a community know if we can do something (e-mail barrage etc.). Good luck.

Also draw on the faculty you said are involved, they may know best how to navigate this process. Good luck
