I think its a pdship agreement issue. I like to play neg dbl here promising 4. It seems many dont. wonder what Bridge world standard has.

If x, does not promise 4, then 2h should show 4. Then, 3h would be reasonable I guess.

if 3c is terrible, 3h is horrendous and 4h *$#@&%….beyond my vocabulary.

not my opinion though

thats the point.

against hand like this 3h may be down while 3c making.

3c helps reducing the downside, whle keeping the upside of 4h making when pd has good hand with 4h.

i bid 4s, should that deny dia card?

Pd had AJTxxxx AK Void(D) Kxx and the bidding went

1s (p) 2s (3h);
4c (p) 4s (5d);
6s

pd thought with no wastage in D, values are likely to be in black suits. is that a reasonable guess or too optimistic?

N may pass having x AJx Axxxx Qxxx then 5c is odds on and 4s might be making.

but N had Kxx A9x AJT9x xx. clearly EW have over stepped having only 8 trumps. should dbl, but who?

N knows that EW have overstepped but S doesn't. so I wonder why shouldn't it be N who should dbl?

question is, should we dbl to prevent pd to bid?

hand belongs to us and they are bidding 4s with 9or less spades (assuming 1 with pd). 4s is unlikely to make, while it will be hard for us to bring home 11 trcks unless pd is void spades. but then pd will bid anyway.

no risk no return :-)

considering the range of possible hands, seems to me there would be many hands where we don't make game but down 2 is easy. when we are making game would likely collect more in penalties, this hand is example of collecting more than slam. additionally we will sometimes right side the nt when pd has Qx. may be someone can run a simulation to test the theory…

seems my dbl is consistent with that since 3 card minor support with no shortness is hardly worth an interest in club contract.

exactly….I took this idea further and dbled to show something in spades but preference to not play nt from my side.

pd showed up with ATx Axxx K AKxx, down 5 for top board.

Exactly….i dbled with KT9 QJT AQXX XXX, but pd pulled and then took us to unmakable 6nt, while good def can get down 5 in 2s X. Even down 3 would get us top board, this is why we “love” this game!!!

does the double show 4h? I don't think so.

if north wants to explore heart fit, can just pass and let south bid hearts. after all the pass is forcing
