I don't disagree that we should have perhaps gotten the defence right anyway - believe I did say that in my reply. All I am saying is that it might have been easier in the scenario I suggested above.

1C was announced as “could be 2”

The “North” player in question is me. I would like to correct some of the “facts” as they were presented. Namely Norman states “The hand was played out with nobody asking any questions and went one down.” This is simply not true - South asked before bidding 2D what 2C was, and the response was something along the lines of “1C is 2+ right? Natural” or “1C is 2+ right? Natural, I think”. Indeed - the OP states that the ruling was based on the fact that East should have said “no agreement” - so that in itself tells us that a question was indeed asked.

I am perfectly prepared to concede that we should have possibly gotten the defence right on the hand regardless of what had been said when the 2C bid was asked about. But would it have been easier if we had known from the start that there was insecurity about the meaning of 2C? I think so.

In this situation, as declarer before the lead was made I would feel obliged to tell the opponents “I'm not sure we have a firm agreement about 2C” or something similar.

Grande, Mariusz and Zia. Surely, as has been pointed out, the world would be a better place if some others in similar positions followed suit (sorry). Amazing story!

Absolutely brilliant performance. No-one can say you did it the easy way - Pepsi, Lavazza then Nickell. Thoroughly deserved and thrilling to watch. Well done!

James. Regardless of the rest of this post, I take huge exception to the comment that a team which I proudly captained in that Bermuda Bowl “fell apart”. Simply put this is garbage. Do you have any basis for this other than we lost a very tight match in pretty difficult circumstances? It would be nice if you withdrew that particular remark as it is wholly unfounded in my opinion.

100% Behind this. Who in their right mind wants anything other than the game we know and love being safeguarded and kept clean. We mustn't let all the hard work people have done go to waste.

Well it is pretty decent no? On a trump lead it is cold if trumps 2-2. If they are 3-1 depending which hand shows out you might still be able to safely navigate two dimond ruffs. If you can't, then you need diamonds 3-3 or a H hook with some info available about which way to hook. Sounds pretty good.

I had a good rule in an occasional partnership with a top notch player - which was that splinters by responder denied a 5S response to RKCB… So couldn't have 2 keys and trump Q OR 3/4 keys. Perhaps this means things we had to Jacoby with hands like hand 1 here - but at least we had a guide in place.

There are nine stanzas of 12 in each round robin - so we play 4-5-5-4 in that order over 4 days hence one session of 36 today and tomorrow (the 5 stanza days)

I have to agree - not knowing the exact schedule when the event is less than a year away doesn't make sense to me - people have to make flight reservations, hotel bookings and organise teams and partners - It really is surprising there isn't a cut off for schedule to be published at least 12 months in advance of such a major event.

Why can you afford two losers unless I am missing something? Doesn't two losers in spades mean we need to find the club 10 to ditch the hearts? Spose there is a possible H/C aqueeze too but…

I've abstained because I want to bid 2D, which in my view should be like 2D over a drury type 2C bid - so saying I am not ashamed of my overcall and game is a possibility. If partner bids 2H I will let it go.
