Aww the director Bob Wallace loved working that regional and loved to see the novice-intermediate players graduate. Also, the director Millard Nachtwey enjoyed it. Glad we still have Charlie MacCracken.

How about an extremely late Passover (Sundown Friday April 19 through Sundown Saturday April 27) and Holy Week including Good Friday, then Easter Sunday the weekend before this regional? Next year I just saw where Columbus is relatively early in March and Easter Sunday is April 12). That may also have a bearing.

Krishnan,
The regional schedule has changed to the week beginning Monday before Memorial Day (May 20)and ending Sunday May 26. The final day will not be Monday May 27. This way the people can spend the time with their families and have cookouts.

John,
I never knew the term “crates.” Were crates the same as a midnight Swiss team game? In yesterday's round robin outside Baltimore, my partner and I had a minus 180 but our teammates saved us with a plus 430. In the first round I don't know how we could manage a plus 710. This is probably my last time playing in Flight B in this event.

Hope all is well.

Thanks for sharing, Michael. Keep up the good work and carry on.
If any of the local American Bridge Association clubs are hosting the Nationwide Scholarship Games on Friday night, September 27 or Saturday morning, September 28, you might want to consider playing specifically in that event. Those are 2 separate games.

Hi Steve. Should I refer you to Atlanta II? Thursday, August the 8th through Saturday, August the 17th.

I'm afraid you're right to open 1 first. It doesn't make much sense. Definitely not strong enough to reverse. Does anyone remember 6-5 come alive?

If you're able to have students play with you, that would be super for you. I believe Mrs. Barbara Shaw won the mixed pairs (with then-husband Mark Shaw) and later became a Grand Life Master down the road. Some other players asked me to play with them but I told them I couldn't play in the 499er events. (I'm at 1940-something in the League so that's Ruby LM. I'm also a Silver Diamond in the American Bridge Association.

Particularly as the entry fees for the North American Bridge Championships are set by Memphis (I beg your pardon, Horn Lake).
I also don't like charging 5 or 6-person teams extra based on the number of contenders. Yes I could have been a contender (Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront).

In the American Bridge Association, our officers serve 2-year terms.

Dr. Jones, can you tell us anything about Arkansas State? I found Jonesboro which is the opposite side from where the University of Arkansas is. I also looked for Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

Wishful thinking. It's difficult for me to take a week off for many tournaments. We have a union contract at work.
Maybe I can get you to make a cameo appearance in Atlanta this August (at Summer National) at another American Bridge Association tournament. There is no schedule conflict with Las Vegas. If you like our product, we can get you to become a double member. National dues are just $50.00 a year.

We already know the cornerstone of competitive play is not the tournament, but the club. You play when you can and don't worry when you can't.

Congratulations Russ, and thank you for your time.

Isn't it cool that Harvard graduate Linda Dunn will be representing your district in the North American Pairs finals? She and Risa Campbell competed in probably their last time in Flight B.

We're also very proud that your district is hosting this year's Spring North American Bridge Championships. I did admire the Bulletin cover showing blues, barbecue, and bridge.

Wow we can use the term “Dy-no-mite” for Jeff and many more happy finishes everywhere.

One thing I try to do: when a double member dies, I make sure the corresponding ACBL unit (or district) gets notified.
The notice usually gets mentioned as a final grand slammer in the ABA bulletin (4 times a year).

Michael, we have Flight B pros here in my district. I usually pay entry fee and supper in lieu of tuition. Some flight A pros charge $75 tuition for a club game and more for a sectional or regional. I'm more likely to use student rather than client. Sponsors are a completely different category.
