I would make a fake jump shift. Undiscussed, this sequence sounds to me a hand that had a touch too defense for a 4 opener than a hand just shy of 2.

East should probably bid whatever number of no trump shows 13 balanced in your system at his first call.

Assuming East is trusting our plays in spades to not be a doubleton, I thought it was entirely possible he had JTxx and was screaming for a diamond over a club.

“Maybe 3 hearts and 0 dias is only 1 card off from 2 hearts and 1 dia. Compared to how far off this distribution is for a t/o *.”

Challenge accepted! 5 and 0 is only 1 card off from 4 and 1. 4=3=1=5 is certainly an expected shape here.

So, if another pair has the same accident and ends up in 3, both pairs get 0 IMPs, since they both hit datum in their denomination?

I read and responded to both parts. I'm glad it's changed in the last couple of years.

Pointing to 296 mentions of an email address is misleading, as at least some proportion of that is simply the address listed on the cover.

I'm glad to see that that's changed in the last couple of years.

However, just because the Daily Bulletin started putting an email address on its cover (which is where the 200+ hits come in) is not the same as askong for hands to be sent in.

I will say at the NABCs I have attended, there was no indication hand submissions were encouraged, or where to submit them.

You're not used to bridge not being scheduled for a working stiff?

Why isn't South bidding 4 at his second turn.

My grandfather made me read Watson and Goren's New Contract Bridge Complete before he would start teaching me to play.

Not sure I would recommend that for everyone, but it probably made me a better player

How could you get to the J? Shouldn't you have been out of after 2 rounds?

I have to agree. Partner didn't raise or , didn't bid NT, and didn't redbid . There aren't a lot of shapes and strengths consistent with us finding a better contract. I imagine partner often has 9 or more minor suit cards here.

Yes, my question is why wasn't control an issue. South's suit is Q high, and North never showed a control.

Did South assume North had to have one for last train?

Wouldn't 4NT by partner instead of 5 be better? We didn't splinter, so why aren't we off 2 tricks? Is the inference that we didn't ask for a control imply that we have one?

I think it's pretty obvious he's talking about standard Jacoby. The first pair go 1-2NT-3-3-4NT-5-6 seems pretty reasonable to me. Responder cooperated after a splinter, so shouldn't have much/any wastage in , and he did make a move.

Also, you can't really demand someone respond to you in 9 hours.

What gain would you have by showing aces at a low level? If all you need to know is number of aces, level shouldn't matter much.

Showing shortness or a second suit allows you to find slams based on fit, not on power. This is a benefit you lack from blackwood without giving up being able to blackwood.

I'm not allowed to upgrade this hand into 1 for some reason?
