IF partner is close to the 3 Ht bid in length I want to make them guess what to do. Could be wrong but we will see. Pass is certainly reasonable.

I always assume partner has a good hand for a VUL overcall, though I could have a King less or so to bid 1H. Still, I don't like the box that Dble builds for us so I start with 1H. Now Pass seems best over 3S.

Many interesting comments. I agree with Peg (and Bernie) as well as some on the other posts. The differences in MP between prs and teams should have a factor in there for level of play. I understand that is has that now. But weak pair fields seem to be inflated versus TMS. Bracketed Swiss would seem like a compromise (as an event to hold opposite PRs) and are popular in parts of TX at Sectionals and Regionals. Yet a team can win a 9 bracket top flight Swiss and get considerably fewer MPS than the 2 session pair event opposite it. It is a problem at tournaments for sure and the formulas should be again corrected.

Sort of guessing with any other call.

Good points
However CARING does not translate to winning at any cost. We all know that Mike is a fierce competitor and always wants to win. Did he exhibit angry behavior? He's probably guilty of that.

And WHY in the world would you choose to bring it up? Sounds like personal vindetta to us. How would you feel if someone brought something up from your past in a public forum?

We're just seeing this Gary and must say we STRONGLY disagree with your assessment of Mike Passell. We have known this man for 40 years and have never seen any impropriety. Why would he start now in a regional event?

When we played against B-Z, B frequently ranted (in Polish) to Z. For “getting it wrong” or for making the wrong hand evaluation?? Then Z would shrug, appear intimidated and embarrassed. I would have loved to be able to understand what was said. They obviously didn't always get it right.

Fred, I would love to see something “cheaper and more portable”. It's similar to BBO, but includes the interaction with other players (except PARTNER–a huge step forward).

A cardboard version that sits on the table and can be transported with the tables from tournament to tournament??? (The problem is getting the cards visible to all players without computers–maybe 4 boards for each hand, holding only one person's cards? Each player would “hold” his hands in front of him until time to play each). Just suggestions that pop into my head. I'm sure someone smarter than me could figure out a simple version that could be initiated quickly.

I do not see this as a solution to the current screen problem. (Perhaps someone's suggestion for 4 people in 4 rooms is the solution to that ;-).) I would really like to see something like this at the Regional level. Like the electronic scoring devices, some clubs will come along.

OH! I thought Fred was proposing this for all games.

I'm not sure I understand everyone's problem with “seeing” the alert. We can all hear it now (and hear full explanation). Fred's BBOH isn't perfect but it brings us a long way. Preventing eye contact is a huge step in the right direction.

We are not dealing with children. Children should be appropriately punished when they do wrong in order to learn; they should be given second chances. Adults who cheat do not need or deserve our tolerance.

How can we be sure that the fox isn't in the hen house? 4 months ago I would have considered Fantunes good choices for the committee. Perhaps your idea of using retired players is the answer.

Although we're in agreement with most of Steve's blog (thanks Steve), there is still the one major difference in our opinions. Banishment is still the only answer. Even the ones who confess (as Nate pointed out–after coercion) need to find another hobby or profession. We should adjudicate to discourage future cheating pairs. It needs to be not worth the risk.

The last time I entered was 2009 Women's Swiss at 2009 NABC in Houston. Extremely pleasant until the last day. I should have called the director, but didn't. You know I always cheer you on Georgi and am so glad you weren't negatively impacted.
