All these comments seem to forget that for some people bridge is a social game and not a way of life. What is wrong with letting people feel good about themselves? Does it make you feel better about yourself to insult the thousands of players that still play the game for fun? Geeze……

I am not usually in the “must follow the rules” crowd, I frequently will let things slide (especially at the club), but… to call someone “ethical” for letting it go - does that imply that following the rules is “un-ethical” or that they are somehow not a Gentleman? This strikes me as absurd…

Why is everyone worried about if the opponents play good bridge? Everyone plays for different reasons, if they are enjoying themselves, let it be….

A LOT of problems are solved by overcalling 1H instead of making a somewhat off-shape X

When I play at the club it is to practice for better events. Let's face it, anytime the director is called to the table the quality of play goes way down… the way to avoid this is just dont call the director. Selfish? Yes, against the Rules? Probably, but it serves the reason I am there, and the opponents don't seem to find their misgivings being overlooked. However, when playing against inexperienced opponents, I do suggest THEY call the director if my partner or myself commits an irregularity, for their protection.

I am firmly convinced some people want this to fail just so they can say “I told you so. Look how much smarter I am than everyone else”

I must admit, I would let them take it back if they were a new pair or a pair that was just learning (practicing) precision. An experienced pair, probably not. Actually, if it were an experienced pair and I offered to let them take it back, they would probably say no and might even be insulted……

Want the opinion of someone that still works and is not retired on why evening bridge is dying (dead)? Having Sectionals on Friday's with start times of 10/3. You are basically telling the working people “we don't care if you play bridge”

Whenever someone says “always” or “never” they lose a lot of credibility… I can point to multiple cases either way. We have to get out of the mind set the “if it hesitates you cannot bid again” or bridge will become an unplayable game.

It is hard enough to get some people to know when to call the director…. Remember this is a hobby for a lot of people (non-BW readers obviously….)

I once answered a question (don't remember the exact auction) with:
That shows 5 Spades and 4 hearts (or something like that). They said “what's that called?”.

My response was “I don't know, it shows 5 Spade and 4 hearts”. Once again, “what's that called”. I finally said “ I guess it is the Brines' Convention”. They then asked “Really? What does that show?”

Sometimes you just cannot win……

I would say “tends to deny 3Hearts” but in some cases (example:
KJ10x Jxx Axx KQx) may have 3card Heart if NT looks right.
