League nights

Another one of those, "Well, I'm sure it's been done in the past" things.  But I'm 35 years old and have only been playing bridge for 5-6 years, so what do I know?

Do local clubs ever start up and compete in leagues?

Take maybe 8 clubs in a geographically similar area.  Hypothetically, each club takes maybe 5 teams of 4 with you to another club on a given day or night.  Two A, Two B, One C (levels to be determined).  Each team plays IMPs, maybe 15 or 20 boards.  Winner takes all for each set of teams.  Rules are the player must have played in a club game at that club at least "X" number of times in the past year to qualify, and cannot switch clubs for league purposes until the season is over (if they happen to belong to more than one club).  End up with a 5-0 or 4-1 or 3-2 score at the end of the night.  Play another team the next week.  Some matches home.  Some matches away.  Keep track of the standings.  Play for trophies or something.

Does this already happen anywhere?  Are there benefits or downfalls to it?  Would it be fun?
