about me
  1. I retired as the General Manager of the English Bridge Union in 201, after eleven years.  I would designate myself as a reasonable bridge player, certainly not anywhere near an elite player, with no pretensions to greatness.

Rating Study from ACBL Tournaments
Well I can tell you from bitter personal experience that bridge players consider grading quite differently from chess players. The ELO system has been around for a long time and probably for most chess players, they have never known any other reality. As I am sure you know, bridge players ...

Assuming you were going to move forward with this suggestion, I wonder how you will communicate such complex formulae to to your mass membership, who are likely to be far less numerate than almost everyone posting here. I am far from numerate so count myself in that group. If they ...

@Richard I was alluding to the colossal waste of money on a previous IT project. Of course it won't cost millions! Collecting data for any system that would be taken on is, of course, necessary. The EBU uses an XML "standard" called USEBIO to allow different software authors to ...

I can foresee costs in the millions range again. A major bridge federation has had a grading system running for nine years, covering its entire membership, from the top to the bottom. It works, it satisfies most people, most of the time, which is all that any grading system will ...

Data can be transferred and formats changed. So the decision would seem to be an easy one. Why not trial both, maybe in two different Districts for a period?

Ian, in a previous career I owned a software company. We sold into the USA but had to battle the "not invented here" syndrome that prevails. Ironically my business was ultimately sold to a US public company. I simply fail to understand why the ACBL won't trial NGS. I ...

Or...you could trial an established grading system that has been running within one of the larger bridge federations in the world for NINE years. Evaluate the results, tweak if it is determined that things really ARE that different within the ACBL (I doubt it is), then move on. Cost ...

Before diminishing the mathematical logic of the EBU NGS, I would suggest that people look at the documents on the EBU's website which explains things in considerable detail.

I qualified my opinion Richard. That point was to counter the argument regarding the suggestions that people will not play for reasons to do with NGS. Some won't of course, but overall it certainly was not making any obvious difference to sessions played.
