about me

Reside in downtown Decatur, the most progressive city in Georgia. Love National League baseball, arts, and interesting dining, but bridge is my passion. Started playing in college but have had several long layoffs while I pursued other interests. Recently returned to playing serious bridge and have established some good partnerships; maybe I can become as good as I was when I was 30. Occasional vugraph commentator. ACBL Tournament Assistant.

Country
United States of America

Bridge Information

Favorite Bridge Memory
The late night discussions at the Sand Bar or Fuzzy's Place and the Saturday night dances at tournaments.

Favorite Tournaments
I really miss seeing my friends and acquaintances at tournaments. I am hoping to attend the following in 2021 if a prevention or cure for COVID-19 is developed: Pigeon Forge TN, Hilton Head Island SC, Savannah GA., St Louis MO, Macon GA, Gatlinburg TN, Highlands NC, Greenville SC, Providence RI, Atlanta GA, Charlotte NC, Austin TX, Myrtle Beach SC
Favorite Conventions
Interested in playing a system similar to Grue - Moss: Precision when NV and in fourth seat any vul, open all 10s and some 9s in 1st and 2nd NV. 2/1 when vul. except fourth seat. Like 10 - 13 1NT in 1st and 2nd NV, 14 - 16 otherwise. Favorite conventions are Keller, Landy, Mixed jump raises, Transfer lebensohl, 3C puppet after 1NT, Serious 3NT, Last train, Thrump double, Double of Drury is takeou. High tolerance for complexity. Good/Bad 2NT; (1C) - 2C (Michaels) may be 5-4; Transfers after transfers; Negative doubles at 2- or 3-level after we open 1NT; 3 over 1 is invitational; Jacoby 2NT is limit raise +; 1M - 2C is 2+ game forcing; Reverse Flannery; Transfers through 2M-1 after they double our 1M opening or overcall; Meckstroth adjunct; (1M) - Pass - (2M) - 2NT = Michaels; 3rd/lowest leads versus suits or in partner's suit versus NT. I am very flexible and generally prefer to play whatever makes partner most comfortable. See my "Modern 2/1" convention card to see gadgets that I prefer.

Overcalling a (natural) 1!c opener when holding a real !c suit of your own
I prefer 2 is Michaels but could be 5-4 (either way). Advancer can bid 2 (if available) to ask for the longer suit (similar to Landy over 1NT). An immediate 3 is natural, preemptive.

Programming a Swiss Pairs movement should be relatively easy; other sites do it. OKbridge runs ten Swiss Pairs every day with 70 - 100 pairs in each. One of the problems is that there will be only overall masterpoint awards; so a Swiss movement would not be popular.
What are your criterion for a 3 card raise after 1m 1M?
Weinstein - Levin's methods are far more restrictive than most. But my results have improved since I have been using these guidelines, and I get far fewer sour looks from partner.

Robots at Virtual Club Games? Yes or No
I have read 48 comments on why players dislike playing against robots, and I have come to the following reasons why: 1) The robots are much better than the average human. 2) The robots do not waste time thinking about unimportant aspects of the hand. 3) The robots alert their ...
Andy Eastwood's bidding problem: AJ972 KT854 J83 ---
Perhaps a 2H bid would be a better start.
Flighted games on BBO
David, I have never seen BBO use Swiss matching for pair events, but OKbridge does for both IMPs and MPs.
BBO Which interface?
Back in the day (20+ years ago), someone wrote an OKscript program. I still use it on OKwin. I have about 100 buttons on a small window that overlays the playing screen in an obscure corner. Each button activates a script that defines the bid or some other message to ...
BBO Which interface?
I know nothing about computers; I am just a player, but the BBO browser interface reminds me of the days of e-bridge. I also tried using the OKb browser several years ago and don't recall much except that I hated it. I play nightly on OKbridge and enjoy the ...
BBO Which interface?
OKwin 4.12 is far, far superior to BBO. And Swangames is also better than BBO.
