about me

Reside in downtown Decatur, the most progressive city in Georgia. Love National League baseball, arts, and interesting dining, but bridge is my passion. Started playing in college but have had several long layoffs while I pursued other interests. Recently returned to playing serious bridge and have established some good partnerships; maybe I can become as good as I was when I was 30. Occasional vugraph commentator. ACBL Tournament Assistant.

Favorite Bridge Memory
The late night discussions at the Sand Bar or Fuzzy's Place and the Saturday night dances at tournaments.
Bridge Accomplishments
Five Blue Ribbon qualifications in one tournament

Favorite Tournaments
Sometimes it seems that the best reason to attend tournaments is to see old friends. My schedule through 2019: Honolulu HI, North Augusta SC, Charleston SC, Macon GA, Atlanta GA, Destin FL, Vero Beach FL, Birmingham AL, Hilton Head Island SC, Chattanooga TN, Savannah GA, Huntsville AL, Memphis TN, St Simons Island GA, Gatlinburg TN, Montgomery AL, Greenville SC, Highlands NC, Oak Ridge TN, Atlanta GA, Ponte Vedra FL, Greenville SC, Birmingham AL, Nashville TN, Savannah GA, Las Vegas NV, Macon GA, Atlanta GA, Huntsville AL, St Simons Island GA, Crossville TN, Jacksonville FL, Atlanta GA, Charlotte NC, Daytona Beach FL, San Francisco CA, North Augusta SC, Myrtle Beach, SC
Favorite Conventions
Favorites are Keller, Landy, Mixed jump raises, Transfer lebensohl, 3C puppet after 1NT, Serious 3NT, Last train. High tolerance for complexity in regular partnerships: Good/Bad 2NT; Transfers after transfers; Negative doubles at 2- or 3-level after we open 1NT; Negative double of 1 heart shows 4+ spades; 3 over 1 is invitational; Jacoby 2NT is limit raise +; 1M - 2C is 2+ game forcing; Reverse Flannery; Transfers through 2M-1 after they double our 1M opening or overcall; Meckstroth adjunct; (1M) - Pass - (2M) - 2NT = Michaels; 3rd/lowest leads versus suits or in partner's suit versus NT. I am very flexible and generally prefer to play whatever makes partner most comfortable. See my "Modern 2/1" convention card to see gadgets that I prefer.

Best bridge advice ever:
Use the Keller convention.
Trick 1 signal
Where I live the King from AKx(x) is the default in a suit bid by partner because the King is less likely to be ambiguous. It may be best to play Ace asks for attitude and King asks for suit preference.
Robert Thorstad's bidding problem: A932 --- AT872 AK74
Will bid 6 next.
Robert Thorstad's bidding problem: T865 AQT83 AJ7 3
Does partner have an alternative way to get to 3 (such as an artificial 2NT) so that a direct 3 is stronger than the alternative?
Robert Thorstad's bidding problem: K KQ872 QT98 AQ4
Is the worst hand pard can have xxx xx KJxx Kxxx ?
Mark Jones's bidding problem: 752 AQ8 KJT84 Q8
What is the best hand partner can hold? 8 J1097 Q9 AKJ1097 is a super maximum, and North may have less. Any more and pard would have bid 2.
Mark Jones's bidding problem: 752 AQ8 KJT84 Q8
A new minor after a support double is non-forcing.
Raleigh
Edit: Friday and Saturday only
Robert Thorstad's bidding problem: x xxxx QJT98xxx ---
I thought 4 was not too hot and not too cold. Sometimes these pressure bids exert pressure on your CHO. Partner doesn't always understand the concept of, "When we preempt, we want to defend."
Robert Thorstad's bidding problem: x xxxx QJT98xxx ---
I opened 4 at the table, and partner with 3 1/2 tricks raised to 5. LHO decided that I was too high.
